First Things First

Start thinking like a research subject

You have received an award from Duke because you had a good research idea and presented it well. Now you are going to be interacting with people who are doing you the honor of becoming your research subjects. You need to begin imagining what it would be like to be a subject of your research.  When your protocol is reviewed the primary concern of the reviewer will be the experience of the subjects.

Meet with your faculty advisor

Before you begin writing your application for protocol approval, meet with your faculty advisor. Your advisor can help you think critically and carefully about how to implement your research before you commit ideas to paper.

Attend a Mandatory Training Session

All students conducting research with human subjects must attend a training session. The session will focus on helping you translate your research idea into a detailed on-the-ground plan to conduct your research. Ethical concerns will provide the framework for creating the plan. Topics will include how to secure verbal consent, what releases are needed when taking photographs, and how to protect confidential information.

Sessions are offered twice a week beginning on February 20. Registration information is provided with the training session schedule.
