Identification of Alcohol Biomarker Signatures

The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism seeks applications for Identification of Alcohol Biomarker Signatures. This Request for Applications (RFA) fosters the utilization of genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic technologies for the development of diagnostic biomarker signatures for alcohol consumption and alcohol-induced tissue injury. Recent advances in high-throughput technologies in genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, in combination with robust bioinformatics enable researchers to rapidly survey thousands of differentially expressed genes, proteins, or metabolites simultaneously, thus employing an integrative approach to identify unique biomarker signatures. These state-of-the-art technologies provide a great opportunity to discover a new generation of biomarkers. These signatures could lead to the identification of potential targets for medication development and for evaluating the efficacy of lead compounds in clinical trials. We encourage collaborations from disparate scientific areas and disciplines, including those not traditionally supported by NIAAA combining unique and complementary expertise, techniques, model systems and tissues. It is essential, however, that the proposed activities be within the mission of NIAAA. Deadline: May 15 (letter of intent), Jun. 15 (application).

Providing this support requires that NRI advance fundamental sciences in support of agriculture and coordinate opportunities to build on these discoveries. Building on these discoveries will necessitate new efforts in education and extension that deliver science-based knowledge to people, allowing them to make informed practical decisions. In FY 2005, the NRI Program will accept applications for fundamental research, mission-linked research, and integrated research, extension, and education projects. Deadlines: Jun. 1 (letter of intent), Jul. 1 (application).
