2005 National Clergy Renewal Program

The Lilly Endowment seeks applications for the 2005 National Clergy Renewal Program. The Lilly Endowment seeks to strengthen Christian congregations by providing an opportunity for pastors to step away briefly from the persistent obligations of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Renewal periods are not vacations, but times for intentional exploration and reflection, for drinking again from God's life-giving waters, for regaining enthusiasm and creativity for ministry. Linda Flowers Prize 2005 for Fiction and Nonfiction Writing

The North Carolina Humanities Council invites original entries of fiction or nonfiction for The Linda Flowers Prize. Submissions should engage readers' understanding of the "humanistic apprehension," bring to light "real men and women having to make their way" in the fact of "changes and loss, triumphs and disappointments." The winner of the prize will receive a cash prize of $500. Deadline: Jun. 15.

Host Institution for NHPRC Fellowship in Archival Administration

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is now accepting applications from archives interested in serving as a Host Institution for NHPRC Fellowship in Archival Administration. Archives should be able to expose the fellow to a wide variety of archival administrative experiences, as well as formal management or supervisory training, during the nine to twelve months the fellow will be associated with the host's program. Deadline: Oct. 1.

Host Institution for NHPRC Fellowship in Historical Documentary Editing

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is now accepting applications from archives interested in serving as a Host Institution for NHPRC Fellowship in Historical Documentary Editing. The fellowship training should give fellows hands-on experience in historical documentary editing including documentary collection, document selection, transcription, annotation, proofreading, and indexing. The fellow's stipend is $40,000, with a benefit payment of $10,000. Deadline: Oct. 1.

Preserving and Providing Access to Records

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission sponsors a variety of projects and programs to preserve and make available for use those records that further an understanding and appreciation of American history. The Commission encourages archival repositories, state and local governments, historical societies, libraries, academic institutions, and others to act vigorously to locate and preserve documents of national and state historical significance. Deadline: Oct. 1.

Publishing Historically Significant Records Relating to the History of the US

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission supports projects for Publishing Historically Significant Records Relating to the History of the US. The projects cover a broad sweep- from politics and the military to business history, reform efforts, and the arts. The Commission funds the scholarly work on the volumes and microforms and also provides financial assistance to nonprofit presses for the publication of the editions. Deadline: Oct. 1.

NEA Jazz Masters Fellowships

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is accepting nominations for NEA Jazz Masters Fellowships. NEA Fellowships are awarded to living individuals on the basis of nominations from the public, including the jazz community. The recipients must be citizens or permanent residents of the US. The fellowship selection criteria are the excellence and significance of the nominees' contributions to the development and performance of jazz. These awards will be categorical; e.g., a rhythm instrumentalist, pianist, solo instrumentalist, vocalist, and an arranger or composer will be honored each year. One fellowship will also be given to a jazz advocate; that is, an individual who has made major contributions to the appreciation, knowledge, and advancement of the American jazz art form. . Each award is $25,000.

Community Development

Urban Homeless Veterans' Reintegration Program (HVRP)

The Department of Labor seeks applications for the Urban Homeless Veterans' Reintegration Program (HVRP). Successful applicants will design programs that assist eligible veterans by providing job placement services, job training, counseling, supportive services, and other assistance to expedite the reintegration of homeless veterans into the labor force. First Amendment Schools Project

First Amendment Schools is a national initiative designed to transform how schools model and teach the rights and responsibilities of citizenship that form civic life in our democracy. The First Amendment Schools Project will select five Project Schools for the 2005-2006 school year. Each Project School will receive a $10,000 grant, subject to review and renewal in August 2006 and 2007. Deadline: Apr. 29.

Preventing Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence within Racial/Ethnic Minority Communities

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention seeks applications for Preventing Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence within Racial/Ethnic Minority Communities. This program is intended to assist racial/ethnic minority communities to assess and prevent sexual and intimate partner violence. Deadline: May 19.

Drug Free Communities Support Mentoring Program

The Department of Health & Human Services seeks applications for the Drug Free Communities Support Mentoring Program. The program purpose is to support and encourage the development of new, self-supporting, community anti-drug coalitions that are focused on the prevention of substance abuse in the coalition community. Applicants may propose to assist one or more communities in efforts to begin coalition operations or to expand or strengthen the operations of coalitions that want to receive such assistance. Deadlines: May 31.

SBC Excelerator Technology Grant Program

The SBC Foundation requests applications for its SBC Excelerator Technology Grant Program. The initiative funds projects that use technology to build stronger communities. SBC Excelerator grants help organizations connect some of the nation's neediest residents including at-risk youth and underserved urban families to important community resources, such as hands-on computer training, Internet access, math and reading classes, and job skills programs. To qualify for grant, an organization must focus on one of the following areas: education, community development, health and human services, or arts and culture.

Local Initiative Funding Partners

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) seeks applications for Local Initiative Funding Partners (LIFP), a partnership program between the foundation and local grantmakers. The LIFP program supports innovative community-based projects to improve health and health care for vulnerable populations. Through LIFP, local grantmakers may leverage funds from RWJF to implement projects that show fresh thinking about old problems, challenge established practices, and bring together nontraditional partners including organizations outside the health care field. Prisoner Re-entry Initiative - Demonstration Grants

The Employment Training Administration invites applications for the Prisoner Re-entry Initiative - Demonstration Grants. The program seeks to strengthen urban communities characterized by large numbers of returning prisoners through an employment-centered program that incorporates mentoring, job training, and other comprehensive transitional services. Faith-based and community organizations will be the agencies carrying out this demonstration. Deadline: Jul. 13.

Teacher Professional Continuum

The National Science Foundation invites applications for the Teacher Professional Continuum. The program addresses critical issues and infrastructure needs regarding the recruitment, preparation, induction, retention, and life-long development of K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers. Its goals are to improve the quality and coherence of teacher learning experiences across the continuum through research that informs teaching practice and the development of innovative resources for the professional development of K-12 STEM teachers. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration invites applications for Campus Suicide Prevention Grants. Study to Reduce the Bycatch of Turtles in the Virginia Chesapeake Bay

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has a requirement to provide monitoring for a study evaluating the effectiveness of a modified leader to Reduce the Bycatch of Turtles in the Virginia Chesapeake Bay pound net fishery. Using Drug Self-Administration in Rats to Evaluate Drugs of Abuse and Pharmacotherapies for Drug Addiction

The National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA) has issued a request for proposal N01DA-5-8853, Using Drug Self-Administration in Rats to Evaluate Drugs of Abuse and Pharmacotherapies for Drug Addiction. NIDA solicits proposals from qualified organizations having in-house capabilities and experience to perform testing of compounds in the rat self-administration test for assessment as potential pharmacotherapies for drugs of abuse including stimulants and hallucinogens. In addition, the capability and experience to assess compounds for the ability to maintain self-administration behavior will be required. Deadline: May 6.

Resource Conservation Grant Program

The Environmental Protection Agency invites applications for the Resource Conservation Grant Program. EPA Region 8. Environmental Action-Fund for Wild Nature

The Fund for Wild Nature invites applications for Environmental Action. The Fund for Wild Nature provides money for campaigns to save and restore native species and wild ecosystems, including actions to defend wilderness and biological diversity. The foundation funds advocacy, litigation, public policy work, development of citizen science, and similar endeavors. Basic scientific research, private land acquisition, individual action or study, or conferences are not funded. Deadline: Jun. 10, Nov. 4.

North Dakota Conservation Innovation Grants

The Department of Agriculture seeks applications for North Dakota Conservation Innovation Grants. Funding News

Scholarships Available-X-rays and Neutrons: Essential Tools for Nanoscience Research Workshop

In support of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, Oak Ridge Associated Universities is planning a workshop on X-rays and Neutrons: Essential Tools for Nanoscience Research, to be held June 16-18, in Washington, DC. The workshop will provide a guiding strategy to policy makers for the development of essential scattering tools for R&D in nanotechnology. The workshop report will be developed by internationally renowned participants who will identify frontier problems in their fields from experimental and theoretical perspectives.

A scholarship program will also provide the opportunity for selected early career researchers (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) to participate fully in the workshop and the development of the ensuing report. To be considered for a scholarship, applicants should submit an abstract to ekkebusae@sns.gov by April 15.

Wright Opportunity Days

Seventh Annual NIH SBIR/STTR Conference, July 28-29

The Seventh Annual NIH SBIR/STTR Conference is scheduled for July 28-29 on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. This two-day meeting will focus explicitly on the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. Clinical Trial Methods in Neurology

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invites submissions to a request for proposal to develop, conduct and evaluate a course of intensive training in Clinical Trial Methods in Neurology. The purpose of the course is to increase the reliability and effectiveness of clinical trials by: introducing clinical fellows and junior faculty in any neurology or neurosurgical subspecialty to the principles of good clinical trial design; exposing early career clinical scientists to the full spectrum of challenges in clinical research; and developing a cadre of well-trained, experienced clinical researchers whose expertise will foster better clinical trials design and thereby hasten the introduction of improved regimens for therapy and prevention of neurological disorders into everyday medical practice and patient care. It is anticipated that any resultant award will be a cost-reimbursement type contract. Deadline: May 16.

Suicide Prevention Resource Center

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration invites applications for a cooperative agreement to create and operate a national Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC). It is expected that approximately $2.6 million will be available to fund one award in FY 2005. The proposed center will provide key services in suicide prevention:

  • Assist States, Territories, Tribes, and communities in their efforts to plan for the development, implementation, and evaluation of suicide prevention programs across the lifespan;
  • Assemble and make available to the field a repository of reliable, culturally appropriate information, materials, and resources on suicide;
  • Assist in the development of resources to address existing gaps in the field; and
  • Serve as a clearinghouse of materials to be disseminated on best practices of suicide prevention strategies and techniques.
  • Provide tailored technical assistance to approximately 34 SAMHSA/CMHS grantees that will be funded through two separate suicide-prevention initiatives beginning in FY 2005 (the Cooperative Agreements for State Sponsored Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Program and Campus Suicide Prevention Grant Program); and for collaborating with the Evaluation Contractor for those grantees to assist with content knowledge, training, report drafting, and the packaging and disseminating of project findings.

Cooperative Agreements for State-Sponsored Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration invites applications for cooperative agreements that support States and tribes in developing and implementing statewide or tribal youth suicide prevention and early intervention strategies, grounded in public/private collaboration. Such efforts must involve public/private collaboration among youth-serving institutions and agencies and should include schools, educational institutions, juvenile justice systems, foster care systems, substance abuse and mental health programs, and other child and youth supporting organizations. Research on Emergency Medical Services for Children

The National Institute of Health seeks applications for Research on Emergency Medical Services for Children. This funding opportunity seeks submission of applications dealing with the following areas of research included under the term EMSC: prevention research to reduce the need for emergency care; clinical research to ensure that children receive high-quality and appropriate medical, nursing and mental health care in an emergency; health systems research, from pre-hospital care, to the emergency department, to in-patient care and return to the community; cost-effectiveness analyses; and methodological studies to improve the quality of research conducted. This multi-agency program announcement is designed to improve the quality and quantity of research related to emergency medical services for children (EMSC), with the goal of reducing morbidity and mortality in children through improved care delivery. International Collaborative Trauma and Injury Research Training Program

The NIH Fogarty International Center invites applications from nonprofit, private or public, domestic educational and research institutions in developed countries to establish Fogarty International Collaborative Trauma and Injury Research Training Programs that contribute to the capacity of developing country investigators and institutions to conduct human trauma and injury research relevant to the health needs of the developing country. Applications are solicited to create innovative research training programs within existing NIH- or CDC-supported scientific collaborations between developed and developing country researchers to begin to build a critical mass of scientists, health professionals and academics with human trauma and injury expertise and a sustainable research environment at the collaborating developing country institution. U.S. Department of Homeland Security National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) 05-2

The Department of Army invites responses to US Department of Homeland Security National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) Broad Agency Announcement 05-2. The National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) is a proposed facility to be located at the National Interagency Biodefense Campus at Fort Detrick, Maryland. The NBACC will execute two of the seven biosecurity program areas of the Science-based Threat Analysis and Response Program: Biological Threat Characterization and Bioforensics Operations and Research. The mission of NBACC is to provide an integrated and responsive biosecurity enterprise for homeland security, law enforcement, medical, and veterinary communities. Specifically, NBACCs goals are to (a) understand classical, engineered, and emerging biological terrorism threats; (b) develop deployable technologies and systems in partnership with operational end-users that protect the people, agriculture, and economy of the United States against biological terrorism; and (c) provide the scientific basis and operational capability to prevent technology surprise, rapidly detect events, respond effectively, and attribute use. The extramural research and development program plays a vital role in the fulfillment of the objectives established by the NBACC. This BAA provides a general description of NBACCs research programs, including specific areas of interest; general information; evaluation and selection criteria; and proposal preparation instructions. Restoration of Hand and Arm Function by Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation

The National institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke seeks applications for Restoration of Hand and Arm Function by Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation. The NINDS has a requirement for the continued research and development of functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) systems to restore coordinated, directed upper extremity function by synergistically controlling stimulated and voluntary movements in tetraplegic individuals with high, middle, and low cervical injuries. Evaluation of these FNS systems will be conducted in human subjects who have paralyzed upper extremities as a result of upper motor neuron lesions. A major emphasis of this work is to produce functionally relevant quantitative measures; any testing performed should primarily emphasize quantitative results rather than qualitative or descriptive research findings. Research and Development in Distributed Simulation Technologies and Computer Modeling and Simulation

The Naval Research Laboratory has a requirement for Research and Development in Distributed Simulation Technologies and Computer Modeling and Simulation. Brood of Spectrum Supremacy (BOSS)

The Information Processing Technology Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is soliciting proposals for the Brood of Spectrum Supremacy (BOSS), a new program to develop software coordination managers that provide coordination support to fielded human units, e.g., tactical teams. Cooperative use of computational and software-defined radio capabilities, in aggregate, offer the potential for breakthrough capabilities in warfighter situational awareness. Therefore, by using software-defined radios, the goal of the BOSS program is to provide a radio frequency (RF) spectrum analogue to night vision capabilities for the tactical warfighter, with a particular focus on RF-rich urban operations. The Department of Health & Human Services seeks applications for Early Childhood Data Collection and Analysis Efforts for the Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) 2006 Cohort. Under the RFP, offerors shall manage and administer a large-scale, early childhood data collection and analysis efforts for the Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) 2006 Cohort. FACES is an ongoing, longitudinal study of Head Start program quality and child outcomes, which to date has included three nationally representative cohorts (1997, 2000 & 2003). The FACES 2006 study will provide data from a new, nationally representative sample of children and programs in order to build on the knowledge gained from previous cohorts. Deadline: Apr. 20.

BJS Civil Justice Survey of State Courts

The Department of Justice invites applications for the BJS Civil Justice Survey of State Courts. The purpose of this solicitation is to obtain a data collection agent for the 2005 Civil Justice Survey of State Courts. This survey will collect information on tort, contract, and real property rights trials that were completed in a nationwide sample of State courts of general jurisdiction. The civil case data will include cases that were disposed of by bench and jury trial as well as an overall count of general civil cases that were concluded through non-trial means. The project will also include descriptive information on how settlement and alternative dispute resolution data are recorded in court case management systems. Deadline: May 20.

Domain Specific Tasks of Executive Function in Neurological Disorders

The National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke (NINDS) seeks applications for Domain Specific Tasks of Executive Function in Neurological Disorders. NINDS has a requirement for an innovative approach to Executive Function (EF) measurement that will be responsive to the needs of researchers in a variety of neurological disorders and settings with a particular emphasis on measuring outcomes in clinical trials. Executive Function (EF) refers to a constellation of cognitive abilities that include the ability to plan, organize, and sequence tasks and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Appropriate EF also includes components of self-monitoring and self-correcting behaviors. These important behaviors are compromised in healthy elders and in people with neurological, mental and age related disorders, leading to disruption of lifestyle and loss of independence. One obstacle for progressive research in this area of cognition is a paucity of valid and reliable tasks that specifically tap domains of EF. Deadline: May 31.

Linking Adolescents at Risk to Mental Health Services Grant Program

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration invites applications for Linking Adolescents at Risk to Mental Health Services Grant Program. The purpose of the Adolescents at Risk program is to evaluate voluntary school-based programs that focus on identification and referral of high school youth who are at risk for suicide or suicide attempts.
