P.O.V. Diverse Voices Project II Funding

The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is a private, non-profit corporation whose members are America's non-commercial public television stations. The Diverse Voices Project II is the PBS's P.O.V. (Point of View) initiative to support stories about diverse communities produced by emerging makers. The initiative will provide up to $80,000 in co-production funding to selected emerging filmmakers, Deadline: Jul. 1.

French Film Festival Funding for US Universities

FACE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting contemporary creative work in the context of French-American cultural and educational exchange, funds French Film Festivals for US Universities through its Tournées program. Qualifying candidates must show films, for which they are seeking the support of Tournées, as part of a festival and screenings of all films must take place within a one-month period. The festival may consist of five films, the number of films that the Tournées grant covers. Films may also be presented as part of a larger festival of French or international films. The support of Tournées is provided for a maximum of five consecutive years. Deadline: Jul. 31.

Documenting Endangered Languages

The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites applications for the Documenting Endangered Languages program. This multi-year funding partnership between the NSF and the National Endowment for the Humanities supports projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human languages. Funding will support fieldwork and other activities relevant to recording, documenting, and archiving endangered languages, including the preparation of lexicons, grammars, text samples, and databases. Funding will be available in the form of one- to three-year project grants as well as fellowships for up to twelve months. Deadline: Sep. 15.

Grammy Foundation Research Grant Program

The Grammy Foundation invites applications for the Research Grant Program. The purpose of the program is to support efforts that advance research and implementation of original research projects related to music such as teaching methodology in early childhood; the impact of music study on human development; and the medical and occupational well-being of music professionals. The foundation also awards grants to organizations and individuals to support efforts that advance the archiving and preservation of the music and recorded sound heritage of the Americas. Deadline: Oct. 1.

Department of Army Cultural Resources Program Assistance

The Department of the Army provides Cultural Resources Program Assistance by entering into cooperative agreement partnerships with organizations that can provide support for the curation of army archeological collections that are part of the national heritage. The cooperative agreements will allow organizations to provide cultural resources technical assistance directly to Army installations, major commands, and headquarters. The Army may also provide financial support (if funding is available) for conferences, meetings, or symposia that benefit military programs. These conferences should bring together a variety of people and organizations to encourage support of cultural resources. Deadline: Continuous.

Community Development

Safe and Drug-Free Schools Emergency Response and Crisis Management Grant Program

The Department of Education invites applications for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools Emergency Response and Crisis Management Grant Program. The program supports efforts by local education agencies to improve and strengthen their school emergency response and crisis management plans, including training school personnel, students and parents in emergency response procedures and coordinating with local law enforcement, public safety, health, and mental health agencies. Deadline: Jul. 29.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly

The Internal Revenue Service is authorized to enter into agreements with private or non-governmental public non-profit agencies or organizations that will provide training and technical assistance to volunteers who provide free Tax Counseling for the Elderly in the preparation of Federal income tax returns. Grant funds are used to reimburse volunteers for out-of-pocket expenses including transportation, meals, and other expenses incurred by them in providing tax counseling assistance at locations convenient to the taxpayers. Deadline: Aug. 1.

Youth Venture/MTV Funding: thinkVenture Grants

Music Television (MTV) has teamed up with Youth Venture, a movement of youth social entrepreneurs, to offer thinkVenture Grants to young people who are making a difference by creating and leading organizations, clubs, or businesses ("Ventures") that address a need in their communities. Grants of up to $1,000 each will be offered each week to a group of young people with the most compelling and sustainable community service project concept in one of the five primary think MTV issue areas: discrimination, education, the environment, global issues, and sexual health. North Carolina Biotechnology Center Educational Enhancement Grants

The North Carolina Biotechnology Center invites applications for Educational Enhancement grants. The program is designed to assist in the development of the activities, programs, resources, and personnel necessary for biotechnology education and training in well-defined educational settings statewide. Emphasis is placed on initiatives at the community college, undergraduate, and master's levels that support industrial workforce education and training. Deadline: Aug. 5.

Proposals to Implement Priorities for Preventing the Introduction or Spread of Non-Native Invasive Species of the Genus Caulerpa

The US Fish & Wildlife Service is soliciting proposals to implement projects directly related to preventing introduction or spread of non-native invasive Caulerpa species into coastal waters of the US. Total funding available may be as much as $20,000 for 1-2 projects. Successful awards will be made through grants or cooperative agreements. Deadline: Jun. 30.

Serological Testing and PCR Testing of Rats, Mice, Guinea Pigs, and Hamsters for Pathogenic Agents for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is interested in obtaining Serological Testing and PCR Testing of Rats, Mice, Guinea Pigs, and Hamsters for Pathogenic Agents. The period of performance shall begin approximately Jul. 1 and continue for one year with four one-year option renewal periods. NSF Biological Sciences Funding Opportunities

The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites applications for the following Biological Sciences Funding Opportunities.

  • The Developmental Systems thematic area focuses on the nature, control, and evolution of those processes that comprise the life cycle of organisms. This area includes research on the mechanisms of gametogenesis, fertilization, embryogenesis, differentiation, pattern formation, and morphogenesis, including research on the development, regeneration, and aging of the nervous system. Genomic approaches, gene networks, integration of developmental gene pathways, and computational approaches are included. Studies that explore the evolution of developmental mechanisms are encouraged. WEB.
  • The Biomolecular Systems Cluster emphasizes the structure, function, dynamics, interactions, and interconversions of biological molecules. Research supported by this cluster includes development of cutting-edge technologies integrating theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches to the study of biological molecules and their functional complexes; mechanistic studies of the regulation and catalysis of enzymes and RNA, and higher-order characterization of the biochemical processes by which all organisms acquire, transform, and utilize energy from substrates. This cluster emphasizes the importance of multi-disciplinary research carried out at the interfaces of biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science, and engineering. WEB.
  • The Cellular Systems Cluster focuses on the structure, function, and regulation of plant, animal and microbial cells, and their interactions with the environment and with one another. Research utilizing both traditional and innovative methodologies, multidisciplinary approaches, technique development, computation and modeling, and approaches that exploit genomic information is encouraged. Multi-disciplinary approaches to the study of cellular systems, including research carried out at the interfaces of biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science, and engineering, are also encouraged. The Microbial Observatories and Microbial Interactions and Processes competition is also housed in this cluster. This expanded activity supports integrative studies that explore novel microorganisms, their interactions in consortia and communities, and aspects of their physiology, biochemistry and genomics in relationship to the processes that they carry out in the environments. Included are studies of physiological ecology, functional morphology, animal sensation and movement, molecular bases of tissue biomechanical properties, and environmental genomics. Proposals that include computational or engineering approaches in any of these areas of biology are encouraged. WEB.
  • The Functional & Regulatory Systems thematic area focuses on fundamental physiological mechanisms and how they have evolved, with emphasis on organisms as integrated systems. This area includes comparative physiology, neurophysiology, mechanisms of solute transport, and comparative or evolutionary immunology. It includes research at the genetic, genomic, cellular, tissue, organ, system, and organismal levels of organization. Also supported in this area are studies of neuronal and glial cell function and synaptic mechanisms as they relate to integrated organismal systems. Proposals for computational modeling to further understanding of physiological processes in organisms are encouraged. WEB.
  • The Genes and Genome Systems Cluster supports studies on genomes and genetic mechanisms in all organisms, whether prokaryote, eukaryote, phage, or virus. Proposals on the structure, maintenance, expression, transfer, and stability of genetic information in DNA, RNA, and proteins and how those processes are regulated are appropriate. Areas of interest include genome organization, molecular and cellular evolution, replication, recombination, repair, and vertical and lateral transmission of heritable information. Of equal interest are the processes that mediate and regulate gene expression, such as chromatin structure, epigenetic phenomena, transcription, RNA processing, editing and degradation, and translation. The use of innovative in vivo and/or in vitro approaches, including biochemical, physiological, genetic, genomic, and/or computational methods, is encouraged, as is research at the interfaces of biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science, and engineering. Military Terrain and Hydrologic Analyses and Databases and Environmental Studies of Selected Areas

The US Army Corps of Engineers, Engineering Research and Development Center, Topographic Engineering Center, intends to award a contract to produce military terrain and water resources analyses and databases and environmental studies of selected areas of the world. The contract will consist of one base year and four option years. Government issued task orders shall provide for a minimum of $100,000.00 for the base year and a minimum of $100,000.00 for each option year, in the event the options are exercised. The anticipated solicitation release date will be on or about 20 June 05. A pre-proposal conference will be held in on or about 7 July 2005 at the Topographic Engineering Center, Alexandria,VA. Escherichia Coli K-12 Model Organism Resource

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) announces a Request for Applications for the development of a central knowledge and data resource (henceforth referred to as the "K-12 Resource") for Escherichia coli strain K-12, related strains, and their phages and mobile genetic elements. The K-12 Resource will organize and increase the utility of sequence, sequence annotation, high throughput data, data mining algorithms, mathematical models, structural and functional data, and legacy information related to the biology of the K-12 Group, while identifying and filling any gaps in informatics activities needed by the research community. This announcement specifies a single award with an initial commitment of approximately $800,000 in FY 06. Deadline: Jul. 23 (letter of intent), Aug. 23 (application).

Beckman Young Investigator Program

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation makes grants to non-profit research institutions to promote research in chemistry and the life sciences, broadly interpreted, and particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. The Beckman Young Investigator Program is intended to provide research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. NASA Releases Amendments to Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) Solicitation

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announces new due dates for Notices of Intent (NOI) to propose for several Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) programs.

  • The due date for NOIs to the Astrobiology: Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology program described in ROSES Appendix B.12 is changed from Jun. 3 to Jun. 24. This change is made in anticipation of the announcement being made prior to Jun. 24 of selections from the 2004 ROSES solicitation. Inquiries: Dr. Michael H. Breast and Prostate Cancer Data Quality and Patterns of Care Study

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published a RFA for Breast and Prostate Cancer Data Quality and Patterns of Care Study. The purpose of this RFA is to support research focused on two priority cancers: female breast cancer and prostate cancer. The research will build on and expand the work of two Patterns of Care (PoC) projects conducted collaboratively by CDC and selected state cancer registries. Approximately $2,000,000 will be available in fiscal year 2005 to fund approximately six awards. Deadline: May 27 (voluntary letter of intent), Jun. 28 (application).

Defense Advanced Research Project Agency - Deep Bleeder Acoustic Coagulation Research

The US Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity seeks applications for Defense Advanced Research Project Agency - Deep Bleeder Acoustic Coagulation (DBAC). The goal of the DBAC research program is to discover ways to stop bleeding quickly enough to prevent the transition from non-progressive shock to progressive shock, which occurs when the soldier loses 25% of his blood volume. The DBAC program will develop a system to detect, localize, and then coagulate the bleeder without causing damage to the skin or the tissue surrounding the bleeder. DARPA anticipates that a conformal wrap-around device that operates as a stationary tool will satisfy this requirement better than a smaller handheld device that must be moved around the body. Replacement Grant to Increase Awareness of Adverse Effects of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS)/Secondhand Smoke on Children

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks proposals to undertake national education, training, and outreach projects that: promote awareness and understanding of the environmental health benefits of smoke-free environments for children, strengthen the capacity of families and communities to create and sustain a smoke-free environment for children, reduce children's exposure to ETS, and assess the effectiveness and sustainability of education and outreach strategies that reduce and/or prevent children's exposure to ETS. Partnerships to Develop Tools to Evaluate Women's Health

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seeks applications for Partnerships to Develop Tools to Evaluate Women's Health. The program will support translational and applied research for the evaluation and improvement of women's health by advancing the development of tools and methods to: assess vaginal ecology; measure immune responses in the vagina; and/or assess the influence of reproductive hormones on the vaginal ecosystem and the immune responses. FY 2006 total anticipated amount to be awarded: is $2 million. The anticipated number of awards is 2-4. Deadline: Oct. 17.

Partnerships for Hepatitis C Vaccine Development

The National Institutes of Health seek applications for Partnerships for Hepatitis C Vaccine Development. The purpose of this RFA is to stimulate the development of vaccines against infection with Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and its chronic sequelae. Research may include but is not limited to one or more of the following: the design and construction of vaccines against HCV infection; preclinical evaluation of vaccine candidates; and pilot scale manufacture of vaccine candidates. The total amount available in FY 2006 is $2 million. Two to three new awards are anticipated. The mechanism used will be a single-project Cooperative Agreement (U01). Deadline: Oct. 12.

Asthma and Allergic Diseases Cooperative Research Centers

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites applications from single institutions and consortia of institutions to participate in the Asthma and Allergic Diseases Cooperative Research Centers program. The purpose of this RFA is to support basic and clinical research on the immunological basis, pathobiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of asthma and allergic diseases and to accelerate the application of fundamental knowledge of immune function to the investigation, prevention, and treatment of asthma and allergic diseases. NIAID anticipates awarding a total of $11 million to support the Centers. Additional discretionary funds of $1 million per year will be provided to support new projects on emerging opportunities. Seven to ten new awards are anticipated. Deadline: Oct. 12.

Lung Response to Inhaled Highly Toxic Chemicals

The National Institutes of Health seek applications for research on Lung Response to Inhaled Highly Toxic Chemicals. The objective of this program is to encourage research about how the upper respiratory tract and lungs respond to acute exposure to highly toxic chemicals and subsequent inhalation, so that preventive strategies can be improved, antidotes devised to lessen initial irritation of mucosal surfaces, mucosal absorption minimized, and acute lung injury causing pulmonary edema counteracted. This program encourages innovative, multidisciplinary basic and clinical research of the respiratory tract with the goal of accelerating progress in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of toxic inhalation from chemical exposures. Women, Gender Differences, and Drug Abuse - NIDA

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) welcomes proposals for Women, Gender Differences, and Drug Abuse research. The program encourages gender-based drug abuse research that explores the mechanisms, origins, and consequences of drug abuse, and that develops and assesses gender-based prevention and treatment interventions and services. International Opportunities

American-Scandinavian Foundation Awards for Study in Scandinavia

The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers fellowships (up to $20,000) and grants (normally $4,000) to individuals to pursue Study in Scandinavia for up to one year. Awards are made in all fields. Grants are considered especially suitable for post-graduate scholars, professionals, and candidates in the arts to carry out research or study visits of one to three months duration. Fellowships are intended to support a year-long stay. Priority is given to candidates at the graduate level for dissertation-related study or research. Deadline: Nov. 1.

Multidisciplinary

Integrative and Collaborative Approaches to Research

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) seek applications for the Integrative and Collaborative Approaches to Research program. The purpose of this initiative is to provide additional support for collaborative and integrative activities to groups of currently funded investigators working on a common problem of fundamental interest to the NIGMS or the NIDDK. These activities should significantly enhance the investigators' existing capabilities and introduce new approaches to the research aims of their funded projects. The new support, using the R24 consortium grant mechanism, should allow the participating investigators to attract and coordinate expertise in different disciplines and approaches and facilitate access to specialized resources and equipment. This mechanism must introduce new collaborative activities that will further the shared research goals of the consortium members' individual funded grants. Research on Community Reintegration for People with Psychiatric Disabilities

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) invites grant applications for Research on Community Reintegration for People with Psychiatric Disabilities. The program will fund multidisciplinary/translational research, especially mixed-methods research, that will explore the individual, social, and service system conditions necessary for people with psychiatric disabilities to reintegrate into community life; the organizational and service system conditions necessary to enable service providers to facilitate that reintegration; and the effectiveness of rehabilitation strategies and programs in helping socioculturally diverse individuals who have widely varying goals, material and social resources, and clinical needs. Command and Control and Combat Systems Applied Research

The Office of Naval Research has released a Broad Agency Announcement for Command and Control and Combat Systems Applied Research. This program addresses current shortfalls in information integration resulting from limitations in technology and uncertainty/imprecision of data and information. The program seeks to develop hardware and software technologies that identify and integrate informational content from multiple information sources; integrate the massive amounts of information; and provide automatic correlation, fusion, and insight to support user-cognitive processes. Particular emphasis will be placed on automating the association of objects and events in the battlespace and automatically transforming this information into actionable knowledge. Request for Information - For Innovative Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) algorithms and / or Techniques

The US Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) is currently conducting market research only. AMRDEC is interested in receiving information on ATR algorithms and/or techniques already in existence that can be utilized for real-time processing of imagery. Algorithms from diverse technology fields including both non-military and/or military sources are sought. Human Systems Integration Information Analysis Center

The Air Force Research Laboratory, Human Effectiveness Directorate (AFRL/HE) has released Broad Agency Announcement HE-05-07-BAA to solicit white papers and proposals for the Human Systems Integration Information Analysis Center. The objective of the HSIIAC is to perform research and engineering development related to Human Systems Integration of scientific technical information and engineering data within the Department of Defense Human Systems Integration community. Technology for FORCEnet Science and Technology - Combat ID: Information Management of Coordinated Electronic Surveillance

The Department of Navy, Office of Naval Research has issued Broad Agency Announcement BAA 05-015 for Information Management of Coordinated Electronic Surveillance. The Information Management of Coordinated Electronic Surveillance Enabling Capability Program supports the FORCEnet vision by developing measurable advances in Combat Identification technology that can directly enable and support enhanced Naval capabilities in Maritime Domain Awareness and Global War on Terrorism. The program will develop advanced or novel approaches for automated integration of information from multiple intelligence sources of battlespace surveillance and reconnaissance information. Personnel Security Research Program

The Department of the Interior's National Business Center is issuing a BAA to solicit proposals addressing Personnel Security Research. There are four research areas involved in this solicitation: Vetting Systems; Continuing Evaluation; Automated Systems for Personnel Security; and Trust Betrayal. Multiple acquisition awards are anticipated with typical periods of performance of 12 months including final reports and/or demonstrations. The maximum award for institutional awards is $30,000/project. Deadline: Continuous.
