2005 AmeriCorps*National Direct Professional Corps The Corporation for National & Community Service invites applications for the 2005 AmeriCorps*National Direct Professional Corps. These grants will support multi-state AmeriCorps programs addressing critical community needs through the service of professionals, paraprofessionals, pre-professionals and entry-level professionals in communities with inadequate numbers of such professionals. Probing Matter at High Magnetic Fields with X-Rays and Neutrons Workshop Argonne National Laboratory/Advanced Photon Source and Oak Ridge National Laboratory/Spallation Neutron Source will join the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in sponsoring a workshop on Probing Matter at High Magnetic Fields with X-Rays and Neutrons on May 10-12, 2005, in Tallahassee, Florida. The workshop will focus on identifying grand challenges in science at high magnetic fields that should be addressed using neutron and x-ray scattering techniques. The workshop will be used to define a roadmap for development of the next generation of instrumentation at major user facilities that will enable these challenges to be met. As part of the stage-setting for this workshop, overviews will be included of existing capabilities at x-ray and neutron facilities as applied to research in high magnetic fields. Both invited and contributed talks will address the new challenges at the forefront of materials research in high magnetic fields. The planned compilation and subsequent dissemination of the roadmap and stage-setting overviews will be valuable in providing an educational tool for the high magnetic field community and aid in maximizing the awareness and utilization of these strategic user facilities. NIDCD Research Training and Career Development Opportunities for Audiologists The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) strongly encourages doctoral-level audiologists who show promise as productive researchers to integrate clinical research and translational research into their career paths. Niemann-Pick Type C Disease Research Grants The Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation requests applications for Niemann-Pick Type C Disease Research Grants directed toward understanding the cause or developing a treatment for Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) disease, an autosomal recessive neurological storage disease. Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program: Breast Cancer Center of Excellence Award The United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command solicits proposals for the Department of Defense FY05 Breast Cancer Center of Excellence Award. The program supports multidisciplinary, multi-institutional teams of gifted scientists, clinicians, and consumer advocates in making groundbreaking advances toward the eradication of breast cancer. The program encourages highly accomplished scientists renowned for their contributions to the proposed areas of research and promising young investigators who can provide fresh insight to work together to accelerate the solution of a central, overarching research problem in a way that could not be accomplished by a single investigator or group. The program also strongly endorses the integration of scientists from nontraditional disciplines such as computer science, mathematics, economics, physics, and other quantitative disciplines. The BCRP encourages Centers of Excellence to incorporate study components addressing ethical issues in breast cancer research. The award is designed to sponsor innovative research by new and established scientists that will result in substantial improvements over current approaches to breast cancer chemoprevention and therapy by accelerating the progression of recent, highly promising findings in preclinical breast cancer research from the laboratory to the clinic. These awards will provide sufficient funding to allow emerging innovators to implement their vision and assume leadership roles in the breast cancer research community. The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation has invited Duke University to nominate two candidates for its Damon Runyon Scholar Award: one physician scientist (an MD or MD/PhD affiliated with a clinical department) and one basic scientist. Scholar Awards support the development of outstanding scientists as independent investigators in the cancer field by helping to foster their research productivity during the first few years of their first faculty positions. The vision of the Revolutionizing Prosthetics program is to create a neurally controlled artificial limb that will restore full motor and sensory capability to upper extremity amputee patients. Glenn/AFAR Breakthroughs in Gerontology Awards The Glenn Foundation, in collaboration with the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR), announces a new competitive grants program, the "Breakthroughs in Gerontology" (BIG) initiative. The goal of program is to provide timely support to a small number of pilot research programs that may be of relatively high risk but which offer significant promise of yielding transforming discoveries in the fundamental biology of aging. The hope is that the projects will lead to major new insights into the molecular factors that coordinate aging in multiple cells and tissues, and the ways in which the aging process is differentially timed in long-lived species. National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is announces a new funding opportunity, the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative. American Psychiatric Foundation Grants The American Psychiatric Foundation will fund educational, informational, and outreach initiatives that promote the early recognition and treatment of mental illness and work to advance public awareness of mental illnesses and the fact that they can be effectively treated. Innovative Technologies for Engineering Small Blood Vessels The Department of Health & Human Services invites applications for Innovative Technologies for Engineering Small Blood Vessels. The goal of this initiative is to apply recent advances in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and nanotechnology towards the development of small diameter (less than 5.0 mm inner diameter) functional blood vessels for clinical evaluation. The NHLBI invites applications from investigators interested in developing clinical products for vessel replacement therapy due to cardiovascular disease. This initiative will complement existing programs to apply innovative technologies, tissue engineering and nanofabrication methods, models, and novel biomaterials that overcome barriers toward the development of functional blood vessel substitutes. NIDDK Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) The purpose of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to provide "protected time" for junior research scientists to facilitate their transition from the mentored to the independent stages of their careers in biomedical research. International Collaborative Research Grants The Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research solicits proposals for nternational Collaborative Research Grants. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Summer Medical and Dental Education Program The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation solicits proposals for the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program, a new $12 million grant program that will fund up to ten sites to develop and implement a six-week academic enrichment program for undergraduate college students from minority groups, from rural areas, and from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine or dentistry. Applicants will be assessed based on their capacity to develop a six-week intensive educational program for eighty students that include academic enrichment courses in the basic sciences and math, in writing, and in current topics in health, as well as their ability to match grant funds. Physical Sciences & Engineering NIST, Center for Neutron Research Financial Assistance Program The National Institute of Standards and Technology seeks proposals for the National Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) Financial Assistance Program. The program objectives are to develop new areas of neutron instrumentation with emphasis on cold neutrons; to explore and develop new areas of neutron scattering science, with emphasis on macromolecular science, condensed matter physics, and chemistry; to assist and train facility users in their research; and to conduct others outreach and educational activities that advance the use of neutrons by U. Cyberinfrastructure TEAM (CI-TEAM): Demonstration Projects The National Science Foundation invites applications for a new program: Cyberinfrastructure TEAM (CI-TEAM). The creation of the CI-TEAM program signals NSF's commitment to join with the national science and engineering community in the support of projects designed to prepare current and future generations of scientists and engineers to create, advance and exploit cyberinfrastructure. This first CI-TEAM solicitation seeks promising demonstration project proposals from partnerships of organizations committed to the preparation of a diverse cyberinfrastructure-savvy science and engineering workforce. Following merit review of the proposals received, NSF will select 10-20 projects for support that together address a rich mix of cyberinfrastructure-related workforce dimensions, and that promise to serve as pathfinders to effective larger-scale implementation activities in the future. Because organizations may submit only one CI-TEAM proposal as lead institution, there is an internal review process for prospective submissions.
