Arts & Humanities

Fellowships and Faculty Research Awards

The National Foundation for the Arts and the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities fund Fellowships and Faculty Research Awards. These awards support individuals pursuing advanced research in the humanities that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly tools. Fellowships support full-time work on a humanities project for a period of six to twelve months. Deadline: May 1.

Community Development

Opportunity Grants

The Starbucks Foundation's welcomes proposals for Opportunity Grants that support community literacy. Literacy efforts focus on promoting the critical pre-reading and pre-school experiences with language and literature that will enable a child to succeed in school, and encouraging individuals to make one-on-one commitments to needy children around reading and writing. This includes school and community based programs that integrate family and community resources to develop tutor and mentoring opportunities; and writing programs for older youth (12 - 21) that stimulate personal development and encourage social commitment. HUD Community Development Programs

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides research and related funding through HUD Community Development Programs.

  • The Community Development Work Study Program (CDWSP) funds two-year grants to accredited institutions of higher education, Area Planning Organizations (APOs), and states applying on behalf of institutions to provide assistance to economically disadvantaged and minority graduate students who participate in a community development work study program. Deadline: May 18. WEB.
  • The purpose of the Community Development Technical Assistance (CD-TA) CHDO-HOME program is to provide assistance to achieve the highest level of performance and results for six separate community development program areas: (1) HOME; (2) CHDO (HOME); (3) Homeless; (4) HOPWA; (5) CDBG; and (6) Youthbuild. Information about the six community development programs and their missions, goals, and activities can be found on the HUD web site at www.hud.gov. Deadline: June 1. WEB.
  • The Youthbuild program provides funding to public and private non-profit organizations, (community-based organizations, community action agencies, state or local housing agencies, community development corporations, and any other entity including States, and units of general local government) eligible to provide education and employment training. Youths who participate in Youthbuild receive a combination of classroom academic and job skills development and on-site training in a construction trade. Deadline: June 1. WEB.
  • HUD also funds studies through the Healthy Homes Technical Studies Program to improve HUD's knowledge of housing-related health hazards, and to improve or develop new hazard assessment and control methods, with a focus on the key residential health and safety hazards. Deadline: June 8. WEB.
  • The Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program (COPC) assists in establishing or carrying out outreach and applied research activities that address problems of urban areas. The program also seeks to encourage structural change, both within an institution and in the way the institution relates to its neighbors. Deadline: June 23. WEB.

Curriculum Development

Educational Enhancement

The North Carolina Biotechnology Center invites applications for Educational Enhancement. The program is designed to assist in the development of the activities, programs, resources, and personnel necessary for biotechnology education and training in well-defined educational settings statewide. Emphasis is placed on initiatives at the community college, undergraduate, and master's levels that support industrial workforce education and training. Deadline: To be announced.

The Spencer Foundation invites applications for Major Research Grants. The foundation supports research that promises to contribute new knowledge to the improvement of education, broadly conceived, in the United States and abroad. Small Research Grants

The Spencer Foundation invites applications for Small Research Grants. The foundation's Small Research Grants Program offers a unique opportunity for scholars and practitioners in a broad range of institutions who are interested in educational research to obtain support for their work. The program is appropriate for modest-sized research projects, exploratory studies, specific phases of larger investigations, and projects that arise in response to unusual opportunities. Christensen Fund Grants

The Christensen Fund invites applications for Christensen Fund Grants. The fund's new program strategy focuses grant making on the interface between natural environments and human cultures, primarily working with peoples and communities variously known as indigenous, tribal, and minority, and the landscapes with which their cultures, histories and artistic expression are so connected. Conservation Innovation Grants - Pacific Basin Area State Component

The Department of Agriculture seeks applications for Conservation Innovation Grants - Pacific Basin Area State Component. Up to $150,000 will be awarded to project proposals for improving conservation practices in the Pacific Basin Area State (American Samoa, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands and Territory of Guam). Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP)

The Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) Office solicits proposals focusing on research and technologies applicable to designing an extensive environmental monitoring system at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and surrounding environs in east central North Carolina. The monitoring system will address military impacts on the New River Estuary in eastern North Carolina. Deadline: Apr. 14.

New Mexico Conservation Innovation Grants

The Department of Agriculture in New Mexico will accept applications for single- or multi-year projects, not to exceed three years. The purpose of the Conservation Innovation Grants is to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies while leveraging Federal investment in environmental enhancement and protection, in conjunction with agricultural production. Deadline: Apr. 29.

The Environmental Protection Agency invites application for the Tribal Community: Reducing Toxic Air Pollutants Project. The project provides an opportunity for reducing risks from toxic air pollutants in Tribal communities by training and education in the application of pollution reduction tools. Deadline: May 4.

Biological Research Collections

The National Science Foundation invites applications for Biological Research Collections.

The program provides support for biological collection enhancement, computerization of specimen-related data, research to develop better methods for specimen curation and collection management, and activities such as symposia and workshops to investigate support and management of biological collections. Biological collections supported include those housing natural history specimens and jointly curated collections such as frozen tissues and other physical samples, e.g. DNA libraries and digital images.

Opportunity for a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) To Identify Small Molecule Inhibitors of Human Macrophage Cholesterol Accumulation for Therapy of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Diseases

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) seeks applications for an Opportunity for a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) To Identify Small Molecule Inhibitors of Human Macrophage Cholesterol Accumulation for Therapy of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Diseases. The NHLBI seeks CRADA collaborators to work with investigators in its Experimental Atherosclerosis Section to identify inhibitors of the cholesterol uptake pathway. The collaborator will provide high throughput screening capabilities coupled with small molecule and/or siRNA libraries of test compounds, or other methodologies to identify potential inhibitors of this pathway. The goal of this collaboration will be to identify compounds that selectively inhibit macrophage macropinocytosis and consequently macrophage uptake of LDL and cholesterol accumulation. Biological Databases and Informatics (BD&I)

The National Science Foundation invites applications for Biological Databases and Informatics (BD&I). The program seeks to encourage new approaches to the management, analysis, and dissemination of biological knowledge for the benefit of both the scientific community and the broader public. The BD&I program is especially interested in the development of informatics tools and resources that have the potential to advance all fields of biology under the purview of the Directorate for Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation. EarthScope: Science, Education, and Related Activities

The National Science Foundation invites applications for EarthScope: Science, Education, and Related Activities. EarthScope is an Earth science program to explore the 4-dimensional structure of the North American continent. The nucleus of the Program is the EarthScope Facility, consisting of the Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO), the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD), and the USArray. EarthScope offers a centralized forum for Earth science education at all levels and an excellent opportunity to develop cyberinfrastructure to integrate, distribute, and analyze diverse data sets. The Facility is designed to continually incorporate technological advances in geophysics, seismology, geodesy, information technology, drilling technology, and downhole instrumentation. This Solicitation calls for single or collaborative proposals to conduct scientific research associated with the EarthScope Facility and support activities that further the scientific and educational goals of EarthScope. Genomics of Transplantation Cooperative Research Program

The National Institutes of Health requests applications for the Genomics of Transplantation Cooperative Research Program. Single institutions or consortia of institutions are invited to participate in a cooperative interdisciplinary research program for large-scale, broad-scope genomic studies in clinical transplantation, including solid organ, tissue, and cell transplantation. Research Projects

The Ruffed Grouse Society invites applications for Research Projects. The Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) has limited funds, which it dedicates to the support of some types of wildlife research programs through the Forest Wildlife Foundation. Funded projects generally deal with ruffled grouse or woodcock, (but sometimes other forest wildlife) and are usually related to evaluation of habitat manipulation as a means of maintaining or increasing the abundance of these species. Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences - 2005 -- Change in Due Date

The NASA Interdisciplinary Exploration Science Program announces that the due date for the Notices of Intent to propose (NOIs) to the Interdisciplinary Exploration Science Program described in Appendix D.2 is changed from Apr. 15 to Apr. 26. This change was made to allow potential proposers to attend the Preproposal Conference and Workshop for Interdisciplinary Exploration Science on Apr.19 in Washington, DC prior to the due date for the NOIs. The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression invites applications for the Distinguished Investigator Award. Domain Specific Tasks of Executive Function in Neurological Disorders

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) has a requirement for an innovative approach to Executive Function (EF) measurement that will be responsive to the needs of researchers in a variety of neurological disorders and settings with a particular emphasis on measuring outcomes in clinical trials. Executive Function (EF) refers to a constellation of cognitive abilities that include the ability to plan, organize, and sequence tasks and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. The proposed contract will be structured in two phases. Phase I will encompass qualitative research focusing on the identification of content area and the development of EF domain specific tasks. Phase II addresses the formal testing and refining of the final battery of EF tests. Deadline: May 31.

Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2005 (FY05) Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Research Program (CMLRP) Exploration Hypothesis Development Award (EHD).

Large-Scale Genotyping of NHLBI Cohorts

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) requires a Large-Scale Genotyping Center to expand the utilization of NHLBI's well-phenotyped observational cohorts and intervention studies for genetic association studies, through the application of large-scale genotyping and widespread data dissemination for genotype-phenotype correlation. The NHLBI is planning to issue a Request for Proposal to solicit proposals for a Large-Scale Genotyping Center to perform high-throughput genotyping for candidate gene association studies on up to 50,000 participants in HLBS studies; and a genome-wide association study on roughly 500 disease cases and 1,000 controls. Innovative Grants on Immune Tolerance

The National Institutes of Health invites applications for Innovative Grants on Immune Tolerance. This RFA invites R21 applications for Exploratory/Developmental Research Project Grants. The primary goal of the initiative is to support pilot projects to introduce new research ideas into the bench-to-bedside pipeline. Applications submitted under this award mechanism should be exploratory and novel, and must focus on mechanisms of immune tolerance in the fetal, neonatal, and early childhood stages of development up to and including adolescence (through age 19 in humans). These studies should break new ground or extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications, and have the potential to change clinical treatment of allergic diseases, autoimmune disorders, or graft rejection in solid organ, tissue and cell transplantation. Clinical trials, studies on HIV/AIDS, and behavioral research will not be supported under this RFA. However, research involving human tissues or samples is encouraged. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invites applications for Institutional Center Core Grants to Support Neuroscience Research (PAR-05-070). The purpose of this program is to advance the NINDS mission to promote understanding and treatment of neurological disorders by providing core research facilities that are not otherwise available. Each grant will support shared resources and facilities used by investigators with research projects funded by NINDS. This support, by providing more accessible resources, is expected to assure a greater productivity than would be possible from the separate projects. These awards will support basic, translational, and clinical research, but will not be used to support clinical trials or to provide patient services.

At the National Science Foundation, the Foundations of Computing Processes and Artifacts cluster supports research and education projects to advance formalisms and methodologies pertaining to the artifacts and processes for building computing and communication systems. Global Autonomous Language Exploitation (GALE)

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency seeks strong, responsive proposals from well-qualified sources for a new research and development program called Global Autonomous Language Exploitation with the goal of eliminating the need for linguists and analysts and automatically providing relevant, distilled actionable information to military command and personnel in a timely fashion. The goal of the GALE program is to develop and apply computer software technologies to absorb, analyze and interpret huge volumes of speech and text in multiple languages. The Department of Justice solicits applications for the FY 2005 BJA Community-Based Problem-Solving Criminal Justice Initiative's Technical Assistance Program. The mission of the initiative is to improve outcomes for defendants and reduce recidivism through the collaboration between courts, law enforcement, human service organizations and community-based organizations.
