Young Jazz Composer Awards

The ASCAP Foundation invites applications for Young Jazz Composer Awards. The awards are given annually to encourage talented young jazz composers. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States who have not reached their 30th birthday by December 31. Only completely original music will be considered; arrangements are not eligible. Compositions that have previously earned awards or prizes in major national or international competitions are also ineligible. The winning composers will share $20,000 in ASCAP Foundation awards. Deadline: Dec. 1.

Richard Lyman Award for Innovative Use of Information Technology

The National Humanities Center invites applications for the Richard W. Lyman Award, an award that recognizes scholars who have advanced humanistic scholarship and teaching through the innovative use of information technology. The award may recognize work that creates new knowledge in some domain of the humanities; that embodies technological innovation that has broad application in scholarship and teaching; that addresses social, cultural, and/or economic issues in the creation and dissemination of scholarly work in the contemporary world; and/or work that uses technology in new ways to bring the results of humanistic scholarship to student and public audiences. Each recipient receives a prize of $25,000. Deadline: Dec. 15.

Tanglewood Music Center Composition Fellowship

The Boston Symphony Orchestra's Tanglewood Music Center accepts applications for Composition Fellowships. The fellowship provides a unique, in-depth musical experience for emerging professional musicians of exceptional ability. Participants in the program, with costs of tuition, room, and board covered by their Fellowships, work with internationally renowned artists, including members of the Boston Symphony, resident faculty, and guests. Deadline: Jan. 3, 2006.

2006 National Clergy Renewal Program

The Lilly Endowment seeks applications for the 2006 National Clergy Renewal Program. The endowment seeks to strengthen Christian congregations by providing an opportunity for pastors to step away briefly from the persistent obligations of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Renewal periods are not vacations, but times for intentional exploration and reflection, for drinking again from God's life-giving waters, for regaining enthusiasm and creativity for ministry. Community Development

Public Interest Law Foundation -- Community Grants Program

The Public Interest Law Foundation (PILP) at Columbia Law School is an independent, not-for-profit corporation founded by members of the Columbia Law School community to support legal work in the public interest. The foundation plans to award 4-5 Community Grants of $1,000 to $15,000 each. The foundation is particularly interested in funding innovative projects that would not be undertaken without a grant and in helping established projects that suffer from a funding shortage. Deadline: Dec. 15.

National Programs to Build the Capacity for Societal Institutions that Influence Youth Behavior

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has published a new funding opportunity, National Programs to Build the Capacity of Societal Institutions that Influence Youth Behavior. $8,000,000 will be available in FY2006 to fund 30 awards to organizations to establish a national program to prevent behaviors and unhealthy environments that place elementary school through college-aged young people at risk for a myriad of health problems. Deadline: Jan. 9, 2006.

FY 2006 Education and Technical Assistance Grants to End Violence against Women with Disabilities

The Department of Justice seeks applications for FY 2006 Education and Technical Assistance Grants to End Violence against Women with Disabilities. Disability Grant Program recipients provide education and technical assistance for the purpose of providing training, consultation, and information on domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault against women who are individuals with disabilities (as defined in section 3 of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. 12102)). Curriculum Development

Tablet PC Technology, Curriculum, and Higher Education

Microsoft Research will use the Tablet PC Technology, Curriculum, and Higher Education RFP as a catalyst to encourage educators to apply resources toward revising, updating, and validating curriculum and pedagogy in conjunction with tablet technology in higher education. Microsoft Research anticipates making 6-12 awards total, across two RFP tracks:

  • The Tablet PC and Computing Curriculum track explores the potential of the Tablet PC to help make computing content and instruction more engaging and effective, resulting in higher success rates for students, the ability to attract more and better quality students to computing programs, and opening the world of computing to non-computer science majors. Projects may consist of a single course, a series of courses, any number of tools, or any pedagogical approach. Typical awards for winning proposals in this track will be $40,000 to $50,000 for one year.
  • The Educational Value and Validity track funds projects related to the gathering of evidence and educational evaluation of the use of tablet technology in the classroom. Track Two is open to all disciplines and focuses on the evaluation of tablet technology in the classroom. Successful projects will identify innovative ways to incorporate tablet technologies into the classroom. Track Two is a two-year program. Typical awards will be $60,000 to $75,000 per year, for two years. Deadline: Dec. 19.

Innovative Therapies and Clinical Studies for Screenable Disorders

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) invite applications for research relevant to the basic understanding and development of Innovative Therapies and Clinical Studies for Screenable Disorders. In this PAR, a high priority condition is a condition for which the development of an efficacious therapy would make the condition amenable to newborn screening. Deadlines: Jan. 1, 2006, May 1, 2006, Sep. 1, 2006 (letter of intent); Feb. 1, 2006, Jun. 1, 2006, Oct. 1, 2006 (application).

Talent Search Program

The Department of Education seeks application for the Talent Search Program (TS). The purpose of the TS Program is to identify qualified youths with potential for education at the postsecondary level and encourage them to complete secondary school and undertake a program of postsecondary education. TS projects also publicize the availability of student financial assistance for persons who seek to pursue postsecondary education and encourage persons who have not completed programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to reenter these programs. Course Development in the Neurobiology of Disease

The National Institutes of Health seek applications for Course Development in the Neurobiology of Disease (R25). This RFA is an initiative of the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research (http://neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov), a trans-NIH partnership to accelerate neuroscience research. This funding opportunity supports the development and initiation or the significant expansion of courses on the neurobiology of disease for graduate students receiving basic neuroscience training. It is expected that each course will span a breadth of diseases and disorders affecting the nervous system, emphasizing links and common themes across diseases/disorders, and addressing both the pathology of these diseases/disorders and their basic science underpinnings. An applicant may request a project period of up to two years with direct costs up to $75,000 in year 1 and up to $50,000 in year 2. Environmental & Life Sciences

Feasibility Study Using Native Seeds in Restoration: Presolicitation Notice

The Bureau of Reclamation has a requirement for services to conduct a 3 year study to demonstrate the use of seeds to produce large acreages of habitat consisting of a dense mosaic of native cottonwood, willow, mesquite and shrubs. The study shall emphasize using a high density establishment of natives, combined with other techniques, to control weed infestation by salt cedar and other shade-intolerant non-natives. The solicitation in the form of a Request for Proposal (RFP), will be issued on or about December 1, 2005 with offers due thirty days after publication.

Indoor Environments: Reducing Public Exposure to Indoor Pollutants

The Environmental protection Agency (EPA) seeks applications for Indoor Environments: Reducing Public Exposure to Indoor Pollutants. The goal of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to support demonstration, training, outreach and/or education projects that are aligned with EPA’s strategic objective to increase the number of people breathing healthier indoor air. EPA anticipates award of 20-25 cooperative agreements from a total estimated funding of $3-4 million. The concept proposal submission date has been extended from Dec. 12 to Dec. 19. FY2006 Deployed War Fighter Protection Research Program

The United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC) invites applications for funding the 2006 Deployed War Fighter Protection Research Program (FY06 DWFP), renewable for up to 3 years, administered by the Armed Forces Pest Management Board (AFPMB). The AFPMB is soliciting proposals for original research designed to help protect the deployed military ground forces through control of insects that carry diseases of military significance (notably malaria, leishmaniasis and major arboviruses), with emphasis on the benefits of insecticides. Proposals may not exceed a total cost of $250,000 per year for up to 3 years, inclusive of direct and indirect costs. Approximately 2-3 awards are anticipated. Deadline: Dec. 16.

Announcement Correction for Middle Rio Grande Endangered Species Act Collaborative Program – Water Acquisition and Management

The Bureau of Reclamation has issued a correction for the Middle Rio Grande Endangered Species Act Collaborative Program announcement. The bureau funds projects for the benefit of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow and southwestern willow flycatcher. The program will fund projects for water acquisition and management rather than for habitat restoration. Deadline: Jan. 9, 2006.

2007 Request for Proposals -- Fisheries Resource Monitoring Program

The US Fish and Wildlife Service seeks technically sound projects for the Fisheries Resource Monitoring Program. The program seeks projects that gather information to manage and conserve subsistence fishery resources in Alaska. The program also develops fisheries management expertise within Alaska Native and rural organizations and promotes collaboration among Federal, State, Alaska Native and local organizations. Coral Reef Conservation Projects

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is accepting proposals for Coral Reef Conservation Projects that build public-private partnerships to reduce and prevent degradation of coral reefs and associated reef habitats. Projects may address causes of coral reef degradation wherever they occur, from coastal watersheds to the reefs and surrounding marine environment. The Foundation is continuing to focus on two areas for targeted funding: hands-on measurable watershed approaches to reduce land-based pollution and sedimentation to adjacent coral reefs and associated habitats; and efforts to measure and improve the management effectiveness of coral reef protected areas. 2006 Pathogen and Toxic Concentration System for Water Monitoring

The Department of Army seeks applications for the 2006 Pathogen and Toxic Concentration System for Water Monitoring. Proposals are being sought in basic and applied research in the following research areas: Pathogen/toxin systems technologies that capture, concentrate and recover trace quantities. Full and partial solutions will be considered and evaluated. These pathogen/toxin concentration systems must be regulatory compliant, robust, and highly effective at a reasonable cost. Successful candidates must have a clear path to regulatory approval, production and end user utility. They must all be amenable to use in a military environment. Deadline: Feb. 15, 2006.

Defense Coastal/Estuarine Research Program (DCERP)

The Department of Defense (DoD) Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) Office is interested in receiving proposals focusing on the area of research and technologies that will be used to design an extensive ecological research program at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and surrounding environs in east central North Carolina. The program will be the design and establishment of a new effort, entitled Defense Coastal/Estuarine Research Program (DCERP) that is being undertaken by SERDP in order to address military and other impacts on the New River Estuary in eastern North Carolina. NASA Announces New ROSES 2005 Proposal Opportunity: Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission Interdisciplinary Science Teams

Through an amendment to Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences-2005 (ROSES-2005), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announces a new proposal opportunity, Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission Interdisciplinary Science Teams. The new program element solicits proposals for Interdisciplinary Science (IDS) Teams to conduct independent science investigations addressing the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission science objectives. The science objectives of the MMS mission are to explore and understand the fundamental plasma physics processes of, primarily, magnetic reconnection, and secondarily, particle acceleration and turbulence in the Earth's magnetosphere. The MMS mission is currently in Formulation, the first of the four NASA mission phases. It is NASA's intention to announce the selection of MMS IDS Teams as soon as possible after the completion of a successful MMS Initial Confirmation Review scheduled for the spring of 2006. Dissertation Grant Awards for Violence-Related Injury Prevention Research in Minority Communities

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is soliciting applications for Dissertation Grant Awards for Violence-Related Injury Prevention Research in Minority Communities. The proposed research must meet NCIPC’s research priorities: Preventing Intimate Partner Violence, Sexual Violence, and Child Maltreatment, Preventing Suicidal Behavior, or Preventing Youth Violence. The Prostate Cancer Foundation requests applications for the Competitive Awards Program. The primary mission of the Prostate Cancer Foundation is to fund promising research into better treatments and a cure for recurrent prostate cancer. Nurse Education, Practice, and Retention Grants

The Health Resources and Services Administration seeks proposals for Nurse Education, Practice and Retention Grants. Grants are awarded to eligible institutions for projects to strengthen and enhance the capacity for nurse education, practice and retention to address the nursing shortage. Approximately $20.9 million is available for 82 awards under this program. The estimated average award amount is $255,000. Deadline: Dec. 6.

Nurse Anesthetist Traineeships

The Health Resources and Services Administration invites applications for the Nurse Anesthetist Traineeships Program. Grants are awarded to eligible institutions for traineeships for licensed registered nurses enrolled as full-time students beyond the twelfth month of study in a Master's degree nurse anesthesia program. The traineeship program is a formula program so all approved applicants will be funded. Deadline: Dec. 16.

Mechanisms Linking Short Sleep Duration and Risk of Obesity or Overweight

The National Institutes of Health seek applications for Mechanisms Linking Short Sleep Duration and Risk of Obesity or Overweight (R01). The purpose of this initiative is to stimulate new studies elucidating cause-and-effect relationships and mechanisms to explain associations between sleep duration and the increased risk of obesity or overweight due to altered metabolism, appetite, or inflammation. Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students

The Health Resources and Services Administration seeks applications for Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students. This program promotes diversity among health professions students and practitioners by providing scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Eligible health professions and nursing schools apply for funds to make scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, whom have financial need for scholarships and are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, as full-time students at the schools. Health Disparities in HIV/AIDS: Focus on African Americans

The National Institutes of Health seek applications for Health Disparities in HIV/AIDS: Focus on African Americans (R01). The purpose of the program is to encourage drug abuse and mental health research to better understand the disparities in HIV/AIDS in minority populations, particularly among African Americans. Research on mental health issues in HIV risk and HIV infection among African Americans is encouraged on determinants of risk taking in a variety of contexts, the impact of neuropsychiatric comorbidities associated with HIV, development of a spectrum of culturally appropriate HIV interventions targeting mental health aspects, testing of behavioral interventions for their sustainability and translation to real-world settings, and improvement of mental health and HIV service utilization. Utilizing Family Traditions and Oral History for Health Promotion

The Health Resources and Services Administration seeks applications for Utilizing Family Traditions and Oral History for Health Promotion. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to facilitate the public's learning process and knowledge of the genetic contribution to health and disease, the public's genetic "literacy", through educational tool development and dissemination of educational tools. Genetic literacy includes knowing about benefits, risks, and limitations of genetic screening and testing, as well as the implications of medical genetic information in a health care setting, including knowledge of relevant financial, ethical, legal and socio-cultural issues. The educational tools will be based on the previously developed and HRSA/MCHB funded Healthy Choices through Family History Awareness nonmedical family history educational tool. Preference will be given to an applicant that represents consumers and the general public and interdisciplinary professions, including geneticists, and genetic counselors, anthropologists, oral historians, folklorists, genealogists, social workers! Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevention Training Centers

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published a new funding opportunity entitled, Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevention Training Centers. $8,200,761 will be available to fund approximately 18 awards to create a National Network of Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)/Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Prevention Training Centers to provide high-quality training in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of STDs/HIV for health care professionals and prevention specialists across the US. Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects and Centers Program -- Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training (ARRT) Projects

The Department of Education seeks applications for Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects and Centers Program--Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training (ARRT) Projects. Small Grants for Behavioral Research in Cancer Control

The National Institute of Health invites behavioral research applications in cancer control from new investigators or established scientists refocusing their research interests to behavioral research in cancer. The Small Grants Program is designed to aid and facilitate the growth of a nationwide cohort of scientists with a high level of research expertise in behavioral cancer control research. Small grants are short-term awards to provide support for pilot projects, development and testing of new methodologies, secondary data analyses, and/or innovative studies that provide a basis for more extended research. International Opportunities

Bellagio Study and Conference Center Residencies

The Bellagio Study and Conference Center in northern Italy offers Individual, Collaborative, and Parallel Residencies for opportunities for contemplation and creativity becoming increasingly scarce in contemporary life. Scholars and artists from around the world have a rare chance to focus solely on their work and share it with colleagues from a variety of different fields and cultures. The center offers one-month stays for 15 residents at a time. Individuals in any discipline or field and coming from any country who expect their work to result in publication, exhibition, performance, or other concrete product are welcome to apply for a period of work uninterrupted by the usual professional and personal demands. English Access Microscholarship Program

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs seeks applications for the English Access Microscholarship Program. The program is designed to give non-elite, 14 to 18 year old students in countries with significant Muslim populations the opportunity to study English, to gain an appreciation for American culture and values, and to increase their ability to participate successfully in the socio-economic development of their countries. The microscholarships fund in-country study for classes close to the students' homes. While the program does not support study in the US, the program does provide for two summer workshops, one for selected Directors and teachers and the other for selected students. Program for Research and Training on Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII)

The Department of State invites organizations with substantial and wide-reaching experience in administering a Program for Research and Training on Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII). US based public and private nonprofit organizations and educational institutions may submit proposals to carry out Title VIII-funded programs that support and sustain American expertise on the countries of Eurasia and Southeast Europe, bring American expertise to the service of the US Government, and further US foreign assistance goals. FY 2006 Eurasia/South Asia Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition for an assistance award in the amount of $2,750,000 to support the FY 2006 Eurasia/South Asia Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program, a series of concurrent six- to seven-week professional enrichment programs in the US for outstanding secondary-level teachers from selected countries in Eurasia and South Asia, followed by subsequent programs involving US teachers with the Eurasian and South Asian teachers in their countries. Historical Studies Research Fellowships

NSF Developmental and Learning Sciences Program

The National Science Foundation invites applications for the Developmental and Learning Sciences program. This program supports studies that increase understanding of cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, and biological processes related to children's and adolescents' development and learning. Additional priorities are to support developmental research that: incorporates multidisciplinary, multi-method, microgenetic, and longitudinal approaches; develops new methods and theories; examines transfer of knowledge from one domain to another and from one situation to another; assesses peer relations, family interactions, social identities, and motivation; examines the impact of family, school, and community resources; assesses adolescents' preparation for entry into the workforce; and investigates the role of demographic characteristics and cultural influences on children's development. The estimated number of awards is 18-28 per year, plus up to two additional awards for Integrative Research Activities for Developmental Science (IRADS).
