Download Issue: Craft Research Fund The Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design offers the Craft Research Fund to advance scholarship in the field of craft by supporting high-quality research undertaken by university faculty, graduate students, museum curators, artists, and independent scholars. The fund, which aims to increase the number of creative scholars and practitioners interested in pursuing craft studies and research, supports research that demonstrates the relevance of craft within contemporary culture. Deadline: Nov. 28. Senior Fellowships in Russian Studies The Harvard University Davis Center for Russian Studies seeks applications for Senior Fellowships for scholars who have already made a significant contribution to the field, and who seek to spend time at the center engaged in research and writing. Deadline: Dec. 15. Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology The Association of Theological Schools invites application for the Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology program. The program is designed to encourage high-quality research that promises both to contribute to theological inquiry and to provide leadership in theological scholarship. The program fund intellectually rigorous research projects that emphasize the interdisciplinary character of theological scholarship and education, and address the needs of the academy, communities of faith, and the wider society. The fellowship enables each Fellow to conduct year-long research in one of several areas of theological inquiry. Deadline: Dec. 1. Lilly Theological Research Grants The Association of Theological Schools welcomes application for the Lilly Theological Research Grants program. The program is designed to provide support for the research efforts of junior and senior faculty in ATS schools. The program has three components: 1) Faculty Fellowships, 2) Theological Scholars Grants, and 3) Research Expense Grants. The Faculty Fellowships will support up to five faculty members with awards of $30,000 each during an institutionally approved research leave of at least one full semester. The Theological Scholars Grants will provide as many as ten grants of up to $12,000 each for research apart from a formal research leave. The Research Expense Grants will give up to $5,000 each to as many as ten scholars for direct research expenses. Deadline: Jan. 5, 2006. Visual Arts Residency Program The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts accepts applications for the Residency Program in Visual Arts. Residencies are open to all visual artists. Emergency Grants for Hurricane Katrina Affected Professional Artists The Pollock-Krasner Foundation is currently accepting requests for Emergency Grants for professional visual artists affected by Hurricane Katrina. The foundation's mission is to aid those individuals who have worked as artists over a significant period of time. The Nike Bowerman Track Renovation Grants The Bowerman Track Renovation Program, a philanthropic initiative of Nike, provides matching cash grants of up to $50,000 to community-based, youth-oriented organizations that seek to refurbish or construct running tracks. The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation -- Contemporary Art Exhibition Award The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation welcomes applications for the Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award program which rewards innovation and experimentation at the curatorial level and supports exhibitions in the US that challenge audiences and the mainstream of contemporary art. Curators partnered with an established nonprofit exhibition space are encouraged to apply for the awards, which range from $50,000 to $125,000. Deadline: Mar. 3, 2006 (intent to apply). WEB LINK. High Performance Computing System Acquisition: Towards a Petascale Computing Environment for Science and Engineering The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites applications for the High Performance Computing (HPC) System Acquisition: Towards a Petascale Computing Environment for Science and Engineering. NSF requests proposals from organizations willing to serve as HPC Resource Providers, and who propose to acquire and deploy a new, and/or upgrade an existing, HPC system. Competitive HPC systems will: enable researchers to work on a range of computationally-challenging science and engineering applications; incorporate reliable, robust system software essential to optimal sustained performance; and provide a high degree of stability and usability. NSF estimates that 1 to 2 awards will be made (as cooperative agreements) in September 2006, subject to the availability of funds. An anticipated total of $30 M will be available for system(s) acquisition and deployment in FY 2006. Award size(s) will range from $15 M to $30 M. Project durations should be for up to 4 years. Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Graduate Fellowships The Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund has invited Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program The National Science Foundation invites applications for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP). STEP seeks to increase the number of students (US citizens or permanent residents) pursuing and receiving associates or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. For FY2003, Type 1 proposals are solicited which provide for full implementation efforts at academic institutions. Type 2 proposals are solicited which provide for educational research projects on associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM. Deadlines: High End Computing University Research Activity The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks applications for High End Computing University Research Activity (HECURA). The HECURA initiative invites research and education projects in I/O, file and storage systems design for efficient, high throughput data storage, retrieval and management in the HEC environment. NSF, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and other funding agencies are especially interested in hardware and software tools for design, simulation, benchmarking, performance measurement and tuning of file and storage systems. 2006 The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) requests research proposals for fishing year 2006 (March 1, 2006 - February 28, 2007) to utilize portions of the total allowable catch and Days-at-Sea allowance in the Atlantic sea scallop fishery that have been set aside by the New England Fishery Management Council for the 2006 Atlantic Sea Scallop Research Set-Aside Program. The program provides a mechanism to fund research and compensate vessel owners through the sale of fish harvested under the research quota. Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Outreach, Communication and Education The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks applications to implement outreach, communication and education activities to support the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air in achieving its' mission to improve health, livelihood, and quality of life by reducing exposure to indoor air pollution from household energy use in developing countries. EPA solicits proposals from entities with experience implementing outreach and communication efforts that have achieved positive outcomes in the international household energy and health sector. FedGrants, Study and Analysis of Strategies for the Technology Innovation in the Transportation Sector The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks applications for Study and Analysis of Strategies for the Technology Innovation in the Transportation Sector. The program solicits applications for study and analysis of innovative strategies for encouraging the development and adoption of new vehicle and fuel technologies for control of emissions including consideration of impact on criteria pollutants, toxic emissions and greenhouse gas emissions. FedGrants, Children's Environmental Health Awards Program The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accepts applications for the 2006 Children's Environmental Health Excellence Awards. The awards are designed to increase awareness, stimulate activity, and recognize efforts that protect children from environmental health risks at the local, regional, national, and international level. Competitive renewal applications for existing NIDCD P30 grants; applications for supplements; and amended applications from prior review will continue to be accepted at the standard deadline dates. Enhancing Carbohydrate Quality in Diabetes Management The National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) plans on conducting a study, Enhancing Carbohydrate Quality in Diabetes Management, to test the effect of exposure to an innovative program of behavioral interventions on dietary intake and glycemic control in early and middle adolescents with type 1 and 2 diabetes. FedBizOpps, McKnight Technological Innovations in Neuroscience Awards The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience supports scientists working on new and unusual approaches to understanding brain function through the Technological Innovations in Neuroscience Awards. The program does not support research based primarily on existing techniques. The Endowment Fund is especially interested in how technology may be used or adapted to monitor, manipulate, analyze, or model brain function at any level, from the molecular to the entire organism. Collaborative and cross-disciplinary applications are invited. Each year, up to four awards are given. The awards provide up to $100,000 per year for two years. Health Profession Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students The Health Resources and Services Administration seeks applications for Health Professions Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students. This program promotes diversity among health professions students and practitioners by providing scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program examines epigenetic changes as a part of the mechanisms of action of environmental agents in the etiology, prevention, or progression of disease dysfunction. Applicants may use in vitro systems, eukaryotic animal models or human specimens. The total amount to be awarded is $3.75 million; 8-12 awards are anticipated. This RFA invites problem-driven innovative applications to address infrastructure needs for patient-oriented research in the NIDCD mission areas of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language. Infrastructure needs may include biomedical informatics and information technology support such as data collection and management tools as well as electronic import and export of data, support for regulatory compliance and management, support for patient recruitment, informed consent and IRB issues, and biostatistical support. The intent of this RFA is to provide support for the creation of partnerships among researchers and/or among researchers and interested organizations (e.g., academia, health care organizations, industry, and patient organizations) and for the conduct of developmental and planning activities for future research applications. FedGrants, Epigenetics of Neurobiology and Addiction The National Institutes of Health seeks applications for Epigenetics of Neurobiology and Addiction. The goal of this RFA is to solicit applications that will link epigenetics changes to other biological changes (i.e., neuroplasticity) from gene expression to behavior (i.e. addiction). This RFA will also support the acquisition of preliminary data on epigenetic mechanisms related to addiction through a modified R03 funding mechanism. The participating organizations intend to commit $2,000,000 during FY2006. The anticipated number of awards is 7-9. This RFA uses the R01 funding mechanism and a R03 funding mechanism. FedGrants, Shared Neurobiology of Fragile X Syndrome and Autism The National Institutes of Health have entered into a public-private partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Health Research Board, Ireland, Cure Autism Now, the National Alliance for Autism Research, Autism Speaks, and the FRAXA Research Foundation to jointly sponsor the program announcement, Shared Neurobiology of Fragile X Syndrome and Autism. The program is aimed at characterizing, understanding and treating etiological and pathophysiological mechanisms common to both Fragile X syndrome and autism. R21 applications may request a project period of up to two years with a combined budget for direct costs of up to $275,000 for the two-year period. For R03 applications, a project period of up to two years and a budget for direct costs of up to two $25,000 modules or $50,000 per year may be requested. Deadline: Feb. 1, Jun.1, Oct. 1. Basic and Clinical Research on Rett Syndrome and MECP2 The National Institutes of Health, the International Rett Syndrome Association and the Rett Syndrome Research Foundation invite research grant applications for the Basic and Clinical Research on Rett Syndrome and MECP2 program. The program is aimed at understanding and/or treating Rett Syndrome (RTT). The recent demonstration that mutations in the MECP2 gene cause most cases of RTT has created new opportunities for both basic and clinical research. Within the scope of this PA are developmental, neuroanatomical, molecular genetic, and pathophysiological research, therapy development projects and clinical studies. Studies of the role of MeCP2 in basic biological processes or in the etiology of other neurological or neurobehavioral disorders are also appropriate. Deadlines: Feb. 1, Jun. 1, Oct. 1. Relationship between Hypertension and Inflammation The National Institutes of Health seeks applications for the Relationship between Hypertension and Inflammation initiative. This initiative will encourage the study of the sequence of events in which the vascular inflammatory state contributes to the development and maintenance of hypertension. The initiative would also provide an opportunity to bring focus on the potential causal relationship between hypertension and inflammation in a cohesive, integrated manner. FedBizOpps, NINDS Institutional Center Core Grants to Support Neuroscience Research The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invites applications for Institutional Center Core Grants to Support Neuroscience Research. These grants are intended to advance NINDS' mission to promote understanding and treatment of neurological disorders by providing core research facilities that are not otherwise available. These grants will support centralized resources and facilities shared by investigators with existing NINDS-funded research projects. The program is intended to support research infrastructure cores, and will not provide support for cores that support clinical trials, provide patient services, or conduct pilot projects. Applicants may request up to $500 K per year in direct costs, for up to five years. Institutions eligible for NINDS Center Core Grants will have, on the date of application submission, at least five qualifying NINDS-funded research projects (see PA for details). Cyberinfrastructure for Environmental Observatories: Prototype Systems to Address Cross-Cutting Needs The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks applications for Cyberinfrastructure for Environmental Observatories: Prototype Systems to Address Cross-Cutting Needs. This solicitation requests proposals for the development of practical environmental cyberinfrastructure prototypes along with a demonstration of their capability to answer significant environmental research questions. Proposals should be for projects that pursue an end-to-end approach to an information infrastructure prototype. NSF anticipates making four awards from an estimated funding amount of $8,500,000.
