Craft Research Fund

The Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design offers the Craft Research Fund to advance scholarship in the field of craft by supporting high-quality research undertaken by university faculty, graduate students, museum curators, artists, and independent scholars. The fund, which aims to increase the number of creative scholars and practitioners interested in pursuing craft studies and research, supports research that demonstrates the relevance of craft within contemporary culture. Deadline: Nov. 28.

Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology

The Association of Theological Schools invites application for the Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology program. The program is designed to encourage high-quality research that promises both to contribute to theological inquiry and to provide leadership in theological scholarship. The program fund intellectually rigorous research projects that emphasize the interdisciplinary character of theological scholarship and education, and address the needs of the academy, communities of faith, and the wider society. The fellowship enables each Fellow to conduct year-long research in one of several areas of theological inquiry. Deadline: Dec. 1.

Lilly Theological Research Grants

The Association of Theological Schools welcomes application for the Lilly Theological Research Grants program. The program is designed to provide support for the research efforts of junior and senior faculty in ATS schools. The program has three components: 1) Faculty Fellowships, 2) Theological Scholars Grants, and 3) Research Expense Grants. The Faculty Fellowships will support up to five faculty members with awards of $30,000 each during an institutionally approved research leave of at least one full semester. The Theological Scholars Grants will provide as many as ten grants of up to $12,000 each for research apart from a formal research leave. The Research Expense Grants will give up to $5,000 each to as many as ten scholars for direct research expenses. Deadline: Jan. 5, 2006.

Visual Arts Residency Program

The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts accepts applications for the Residency Program in Visual Arts. Residencies are open to all visual artists. The program provides well-equipped studios, living accommodations, and a monthly stipend. Deadline: Feb. 28, 2006.

Community Development

Emergency Grants for Hurricane Katrina Affected Professional Artists

The Pollock-Krasner Foundation is currently accepting requests for Emergency Grants for professional visual artists affected by Hurricane Katrina. The foundation's mission is to aid those individuals who have worked as artists over a significant period of time. Eligible applicants must be able to demonstrate recognizable artistic merit and financial need, whether professional, personal, or both. Deadline: Open.

Nike Bowerman Track Renovation Grants

The Bowerman Track Renovation Program, a philanthropic initiative of Nike, provides matching cash grants of up to $50,000 to community-based, youth-oriented organizations that seek to refurbish or construct running tracks. Deadline: Open.

Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation -- Contemporary Art Exhibition Award

The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation welcomes applications for the Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award program which rewards innovation and experimentation at the curatorial level and supports exhibitions in the US that challenge audiences and the mainstream of contemporary art. Curators partnered with an established nonprofit exhibition space are encouraged to apply for the awards, which range from $50,000 to $125,000. Deadline: Mar. 3, 2006 (intent to apply).

2006 Learn and Serve America School-Based Grant Program

The Corporation for National & Community Service seeks applications for the 2006 Learn and Serve America School-Based Grant Program. The purpose of the program is to involve young people between the ages 5-17 in service-learning projects that simultaneously support student development and meet community needs in areas such as the environment, education, public safety, and other human needs. Curriculum Development

High Performance Computing System Acquisition: Towards a Petascale Computing Environment for Science and Engineering

The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites applications for the High Performance Computing (HPC) System Acquisition: Towards a Petascale Computing Environment for Science and Engineering. NSF requests proposals from organizations willing to serve as HPC Resource Providers, and who propose to acquire and deploy a new, and/or upgrade an existing, HPC system. Competitive HPC systems will: enable researchers to work on a range of computationally-challenging science and engineering applications; incorporate reliable, robust system software essential to optimal sustained performance; and provide a high degree of stability and usability. NSF estimates that 1 to 2 awards will be made (as cooperative agreements) in September 2006, subject to the availability of funds. An anticipated total of $30 M will be available for system(s) acquisition and deployment in FY 2006. Award size(s) will range from $15 M to $30 M. Project durations should be for up to 4 years.

An organization may submit up to two proposals in response to this solicitation. An internal review process is necessary to assure that Duke University submits its most competitive proposals. Anyone interested in making a submission must first email the following materials to Ken Macdonald in the Office of Research Support (kwmac@duke.edu, 681-5988) by the Nov. 30th Duke internal deadline.

  • A letter of endorsement from the principal investigator's chair or dean (two-page maximum). This letter should include a statement of the amount to be requested from NSF.
  • A draft Project Summary.
  • An abridged draft of five of the six sections required for the Project Description (limited to 1 page for each section):
    • HPC System Specification.
    • HPC System Reliability and Usability.
    • Implementation, Project Management, and Risk Mitigation.
    • Quality of the Physical Infrastructure.
    • Effective User Support and Projected Operating Costs.

A one-page summary of specific, concrete applications planned for the proposed HPC System is also required for submission to NSF. This requires benchmarking analysis that we will not expect completed for internal review, but prospective applicants should be aware that it must be completed prior to the Feb. 10th Fastlane submission deadline. Deadline: Nov. 30 (Duke internal).

Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Graduate Fellowships

The Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund has invited Duke University to submit up to three nominations for its Graduate Fellowship program. The program supports graduate students who have outstanding undergraduate records, have demonstrated a need for financial assistance, are citizens of the US, are enrolled in accredited US colleges and universities, and have already received their baccalaureate degrees. Students may be engaged in virtually any field of study, including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, law, medicine, or engineering. The fellowship covers the cost of tuition and provides a stipend. (For the financial section of the application, Duke's 2006 tuition will be $28,080 and room, board and living expenses will be $18,250.) Students must apply for renewal of their fellowships each year, for a maximum of three years' support. Please note that candidates may be required by the trustee administering the program to submit an affidavit affirming that they do not "support, advocate, or uphold the principles and doctrines of Communism." Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program

The National Science Foundation invites applications for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP). STEP seeks to increase the number of students (US citizens or permanent residents) pursuing and receiving associates or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. For FY2003, Type 1 proposals are solicited which provide for full implementation efforts at academic institutions. Type 2 proposals are solicited which provide for educational research projects on associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM. Deadlines: Jan. 5, 2006 (Type 1 letter of intent), Aug. 15, 2006 (Type 1 and Type 2 letter of intent); Feb. 9, 2006 (Type 1 proposal), Sep. 26, 2006 (Type 1 and Type 2 proposals).

High End Computing University Research Activity

The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks applications for High End Computing University Research Activity (HECURA). The HECURA initiative invites research and education projects in I/O, file and storage systems design for efficient, high throughput data storage, retrieval and management in the HEC environment. NSF, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and other funding agencies are especially interested in hardware and software tools for design, simulation, benchmarking, performance measurement and tuning of file and storage systems. Supported areas include but are not limited to:

  • File systems research,
  • Quality of Service,
  • Security,
  • I/O middleware,
  • Archives/Backups as extensions to file systems,
  • Novel storage devices for the I/O stack,
  • I/O architectures,
  • Management, reliability and availability at scale,

2006 Learn and Serve America Higher Education Grant Program

The Corporation for National & Community Service seeks applications for 2006 Learn and Serve America Higher Education Grant Program. The purpose of the grants is to expand participation in community service and service-learning by supporting innovative community service programs carried out through institutions of higher education that act as civic institutions to meet the human, educational, environmental, or public safety needs of neighboring communities. Emphasis is placed both on institutional change to support service and service-learning within higher education and on community problem-solving and capacity-building. The expected number of awards is 40, with an award ceiling of $500,000. Deadline: Feb. 28, 2006.

Environmental & Life Sciences

2006 Atlantic Sea Scallop Research Set-Aside Program

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) requests research proposals for fishing year 2006 (March 1, 2006 - February 28, 2007) to utilize portions of the total allowable catch and Days-at-Sea  allowance in the Atlantic sea scallop fishery that have been set aside by the New England Fishery Management Council for the 2006 Atlantic Sea Scallop Research Set-Aside Program. The program provides a mechanism to fund research and compensate vessel owners through the sale of fish harvested under the research quota. No Federal funds will be provided for research under this notification. Deadline: Nov. 18.

2006 Request for Initial Proposals for Yukon River Salmon Research and Management Projects

The US Fish and Wildlife Service receives funds for implementation of the Yukon River Salmon Agreement reached with Canada in March 2001. The Service administers these funds through grants, purchase orders, and contracts on a competitive basis for projects / studies that advance the scientific community's understanding of and management of Chinook and chum salmon in the Yukon River in Alaska. This is a call for initial project proposals of one year in length. The Service will award approximately $300,000 in 2006. Eight awards are anticipated. Deadlines: Nov. 23.

Strategic Agricultural Initiative Program

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) solicits applications for the Strategic Agricultural Initiative Program which will help implement requirements of the Food Quality Protection Act, and support the transition to using less and lower risk pesticides in food production. The program supports grants for education, demonstration, and implementation projects. The EPA anticipates having approximately $220,000 in 2006 for awards. Projects up to $75,000 will be considered for funding. Deadline: Nov. 30.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Outreach, Communication and Education

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks applications to implement outreach, communication and education activities to support the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air in achieving its' mission to improve health, livelihood, and quality of life by reducing exposure to indoor air pollution from household energy use in developing countries. EPA solicits proposals from entities with experience implementing outreach and communication efforts that have achieved positive outcomes in the international household energy and health sector. Study and Analysis of Strategies for the Technology Innovation in the Transportation Sector

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks applications for Study and Analysis of Strategies for the Technology Innovation in the Transportation Sector. The program solicits applications for study and analysis of innovative strategies for encouraging the development and adoption of new vehicle and fuel technologies for control of emissions including consideration of impact on criteria pollutants, toxic emissions and greenhouse gas emissions. Project will be funded in one year increments of approximately $350,000 over a three year period. Deadline: Dec. 14.

Children's Environmental Health Awards Program

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accepts applications for the 2006 Children's Environmental Health Excellence Awards. The awards are designed to increase awareness, stimulate activity, and recognize efforts that protect children from environmental health risks at the local, regional, national, and international level. Researchers may apply under only one category: Government, Non-Governmental Organizations, Corporate, Individual, and K-12 and Higher Education. EPA will be looking for projects that significantly impact children's environmental health issues through research; indicators; capacity building; regulatory and policy innovations; education and outreach; and interventions. Dec. 15.

Change in Status of Program Guidelines for NIDCD Research Core Center (P30) Grants

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) announces a Change in the Submission Guidelines for NIDCD Research Core Centers (P30), effective immediately: No new submissions for NIDCD P30 Research Core Centers are being accepted by NIDCD after the October 1, 2005 deadline, until further notice. Competitive renewal applications for existing NIDCD P30 grants; applications for supplements; and amended applications from prior review will continue to be accepted at the standard deadline dates.

Those institutions with substantial breadth in neuroscience are encouraged to look over the new announcement (September 29, 2005) for Neuroscience Blueprint Interdisciplinary Core Grants, available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-NS-06-003.html.

Enhancing Carbohydrate Quality in Diabetes Management

The National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) plans on conducting a study, Enhancing Carbohydrate Quality in Diabetes Management, to test the effect of exposure to an innovative program of behavioral interventions on dietary intake and glycemic control in early and middle adolescents with type 1 and 2 diabetes. McKnight Technological Innovations in Neuroscience Awards

The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience supports scientists working on new and unusual approaches to understanding brain function through the Technological Innovations in Neuroscience Awards. The program does not support research based primarily on existing techniques. The Endowment Fund is especially interested in how technology may be used or adapted to monitor, manipulate, analyze, or model brain function at any level, from the molecular to the entire organism. Collaborative and cross-disciplinary applications are invited. Each year, up to four awards are given. The awards provide up to $100,000 per year for two years. Funds may be used toward a variety of research activities but not the recipient's salary. Deadline: Dec. 1 (letter of intent).

Health Profession Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students

The Health Resources and Services Administration seeks applications for Health Professions Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students. This program promotes diversity among health professions students and practitioners by providing scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Eligible health professions and nursing schools apply for funds to make scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, whom have financial need for scholarships and are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, as full-time students at the schools. Environmental Influences on Epigenetic Regulation

The National Institute of Health seeks applications for the Environmental Influences on Epigenetic Regulation. The program examines epigenetic changes as a part of the mechanisms of action of environmental agents in the etiology, prevention, or progression of disease dysfunction. NIDCD R21/R33 Phased Infrastructure Grant for Patient-Oriented Research

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) seeks applications for the NIDCD R21/R33 Phased Infrastructure Grant for Patient-Oriented Research program. This RFA invites problem-driven innovative applications to address infrastructure needs for patient-oriented research in the NIDCD mission areas of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language. Infrastructure needs may include biomedical informatics and information technology support such as data collection and management tools as well as electronic import and export of data, support for regulatory compliance and management, support for patient recruitment, informed consent and IRB issues, and biostatistical support. Applications should seek to address and provide infrastructure needs across groups of investigators or across a region, with a focus on increased access and efficiency. NIDCD R24 Developmental Grant for Patient-Oriented Research

The National Institute of Health welcomes R24 Developmental Grant Applications that will lead to future patient-oriented research in the NIDCD mission areas of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language. The intent of this RFA is to provide support for the creation of partnerships among researchers and/or among researchers and interested organizations (e.g., academia, health care organizations, industry, and patient organizations) and for the conduct of developmental and planning activities for future research applications. Epigenetics of Neurobiology and Addiction

The National Institutes of Health seeks applications for Epigenetics of Neurobiology and Addiction. The goal of this RFA is to solicit applications that will link epigenetics changes to other biological changes (i.e., neuroplasticity) from gene expression to behavior (i.e. addiction). This RFA will also support the acquisition of preliminary data on epigenetic mechanisms related to addiction through a modified R03 funding mechanism. The participating organizations intend to commit $2,000,000 during FY2006. The anticipated number of awards is 7-9. This RFA uses the R01 funding mechanism and a R03 funding mechanism. The R03 will provide up to $100,000 per year direct costs for up to two years. Deadlines: Dec. 23 (letter of intent), Jan. 23, 2006 (application).

Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health

The National Institutes of Health seeks applications for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health. The program encourages investigators to submit research grant applications that will identify, develop, and refine effective and efficient methods, structures, and strategies that test models to disseminate and implement research-tested health behavior change interventions and evidence-based prevention, early detection, diagnostic, treatment, and quality of life improvement services into public health and clinical practice settings. Shared Neurobiology of Fragile X Syndrome and Autism

The National Institutes of Health have entered into a public-private partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Health Research Board, Ireland, Cure Autism Now, the National Alliance for Autism Research, Autism Speaks, and the FRAXA Research Foundation to jointly sponsor the program announcement, Shared Neurobiology of Fragile X Syndrome and Autism. The program is aimed at characterizing, understanding and treating etiological and pathophysiological mechanisms common to both Fragile X syndrome and autism. R21 applications may request a project period of up to two years with a combined budget for direct costs of up to $275,000 for the two-year period. For R03 applications, a project period of up to two years and a budget for direct costs of up to two $25,000 modules or $50,000 per year may be requested. Deadline: Feb. 1, Jun.1, Oct. 1.

Basic and Clinical Research on Rett Syndrome and MECP2

The National Institutes of Health, the International Rett Syndrome Association and the Rett Syndrome Research Foundation invite research grant applications for the Basic and Clinical Research on Rett Syndrome and MECP2 program. The program is aimed at understanding and/or treating Rett Syndrome (RTT). The recent demonstration that mutations in the MECP2 gene cause most cases of RTT has created new opportunities for both basic and clinical research. Within the scope of this PA are developmental, neuroanatomical, molecular genetic, and pathophysiological research, therapy development projects and clinical studies. Studies of the role of MeCP2 in basic biological processes or in the etiology of other neurological or neurobehavioral disorders are also appropriate. Deadlines: Feb. 1, Jun. 1, Oct. 1.

Relationship between Hypertension and Inflammation

The National Institutes of Health seeks applications for the Relationship between Hypertension and Inflammation initiative. This initiative will encourage the study of the sequence of events in which the vascular inflammatory state contributes to the development and maintenance of hypertension. The initiative would also provide an opportunity to bring focus on the potential causal relationship between hypertension and inflammation in a cohesive, integrated manner. Livelihoods Initiative in Ethiopia

The Agency for International Development (USAID) requests proposals to the Livelihood Initiative in Ethiopia. The broad goals of the initiative are to provide emergency, life-saving assistance to those populations most at-risk from food insecurity, increase the capacity of households and communities to cope with recurrent drought, economic, and health shocks, prepare communities to transition to longer-term development initiatives, assist affected populations in the recovery process to promote self-sufficiency and minimize dependence on external assistance. Provost's Common Fund Request for Proposals 2006-2007

The Office of the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies invites applications for the Provost's Common Fund Competition. NINDS Institutional Center Core Grants to Support Neuroscience Research

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invites applications for Institutional Center Core Grants to Support Neuroscience Research. These grants are intended to advance NINDS' mission to promote understanding and treatment of neurological disorders by providing core research facilities that are not otherwise available. These grants will support centralized resources and facilities shared by investigators with existing NINDS-funded research projects. The program is intended to support research infrastructure cores, and will not provide support for cores that support clinical trials, provide patient services, or conduct pilot projects. Applicants may request up to $500 K per year in direct costs, for up to five years.

Institutions eligible for NINDS Center Core Grants will have, on the date of application submission, at least five qualifying NINDS-funded research projects (see PA for details). NINDS will not consider more than one application simultaneously from an applicant organization. Anyone interested in submitting a proposal in response to this institutionally limited solicitation must first submit their proposed project for internal review. Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) Program

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) solicits innovative proposals for the research and development of very small (<7.5cm), very lightweight (<10 grams) UAVs (nano Air Vehicles). The goal of this program is to prove the feasibility and viability of UAV on this extremely small scale. Such a capability would provide the military services with a highly effective tool for the collection of battlefield intelligence. Request for Grant Proposals: Future Leaders Exchange Civic Education Workshop

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition to conduct the Spring 2006 Civic Education Workshop for the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program.
