Carnegie Scholars Program

Through the Carnegie Scholars Program, the Carnegie Corporation supports scholars whose research extends the boundaries of knowledge about Islam and Muslim Communities. The program encourages nominations of scholars who may be based in interdisciplinary centers or outside of an institution. The Corporation particularly seeks candidates who demonstrate the capacity to communicate their findings beyond the scholarly community to the public and policymakers. Up to 20 $100,000 fellowships are awarded annually. President Brodhead has been asked to submit 1-2 nominations. Grants to Preserve and Create Access to Humanities Collections

The National Endowment for the Humanities seeks applications for Grants to Preserve and Create Access to Humanities Collections. These grants support projects that preserve collections and create intellectual access to collections that, because of their intellectual content and value as cultural artifacts, are considered highly important for research, education, and public programming in the humanities. Collections may include, but are not limited to, books, journals, newspapers, manuscript and archival materials, maps, still and moving images, sound recordings, and objects of art and material culture. Deadline extended from original date of Jul. 17. Deadline: Jul. 25.

Preservation and Access Reference Materials Grants: Due Date Extension

The National Endowment for the Humanities seeks applications for Preservation and Access Reference Materials Grants.Eligible projects include: databases and electronic archives that codify and integrate humanities materials, or provide bibliographical control of a subject or field; print and online encyclopedias about various fields in the humanities or about a particular area or subject; historical, etymological, and bilingual dictionaries for undocumented languages, as well as reference grammars and other linguistic tools (separate funding is available for endangered language projects in partnership with the National Science Foundation); tools for spatial analysis and representation of humanities data, such as atlases and geographical information systems (GIS); and descriptive catalogs that provide detailed information about humanities materials. Digitizing Historical Records

The National Archives and Records Administration invites applications for Digitizing Historical Records. The program promotes the preservation and use of America's documentary heritage. The Commission seeks proposals to test and implement cost-effective methods to scan historical record collections and make digital versions freely available on the Internet. Deadline: Oct. 2.

Archives Leadership Institute

 The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) invites proposals to design and implement an Archives Leadership Institute. NARA envisions a one- to two-week program that will tailor contemporary best practices in leadership skills to issues specific to archives. Deadline: Oct. 2.

Historical Documentary Editing Fellowships

 The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) accepts proposals for Historical Documentary Editing Fellowships. An application from a prospective host institution should demonstrate the capability to provide strong post-graduate training in documentary editing, including document collection, accessioning, and control; selection; transcription; annotation; proofreading; indexing; and project management. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) provides this funding to ensure that recent History Ph.D.s or advanced graduate students have exposure to historical editing techniques and careers. Deadline: Oct. 2.

Archival and Records Project Grants

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) requests applications for Archival and Records Project Grants. NARA supports projects to facilitate the use of historical records held by archives and other repositories and to assure their long-term preservation. This program also supports projects to develop tools and techniques for the profession and projects to address professional education activities. Deadline: Oct. 2.

Community Development

Compassion Capital Fund Demonstration Program

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) accepts grant applications for the Compassion Capital Fund Demonstration Program. ACF will award funds to experienced organizations to deliver capacity building services to faith-based and community organizations through the provision of training, technical assistance, and sub-awards. Intermediary organizations will assist faith-based and community organizations with capacity building activities. Deadline: Jun. 19.

National Faith-Based and National Community Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Programs for High-Risk Women

The Office of Women's Health and Office of Minority Health are interested in establishing national faith-based and/or national community cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention programs. The purpose of the program is to reduce CVD mortality and morbidity among high-risk women in the US through medical screening and risk behavior modification. The CVD prevention programs will be targeted towards high-risk racial and ethnic minority women, aged 40 years and older. Deadline: June 21 (letter of intent), July 6 (application).

Mentoring Partnership Program

The Office of Public Health and Science seeks proposals for the Mentoring Partnership Program. The purpose of program is to strengthen the organizational infrastructure and program services of small non-profit organizations so they may deliver improved HIV/AIDS prevention and support services to women most at risk for acquiring HIV/AIDS and women with positive HIV serostatus. Deadline: June 22.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Innovation Fund Grants

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation accepts applications for one-time Innovation Fund Grants to nonprofit organizations to spark the creation or expansion of innovative education programs focusing on a particular field each year. The 2007 Innovation Fund seeks proposals in two areas: International educational experiences occurring outside the US, and Foreign language immersion programs located in the US or abroad. Each $150,000 grant may cover 1-2 years of program work. Deadline: June 29.

National Healthy Marriage Resource Center

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) solicits applications to fund the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center (NHMRC). The NHMRC operates a website that serves as a national repository and clearinghouse for information and research relating to healthy marriage. In addition to being a website and clearinghouse, NHMRC will provide information and technical support to States, localities and community programs on capacity building to support healthy marriage program development and implementation. Deadline: June 30.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) accepts applications for Healthy Marriage Demonstration Grants. These grants will support innovative, projects designed to strengthen existing marriages and to prepare unmarried couples for successful healthy marriages. Deadline: June 30.

Tourism Conservation Project Grants

Tourism Cares for Tomorrow awards Conservation Project Grants to worthy tourism-related nonprofit organizations worldwide for conservation or preservation of exceptional cultural, historic, or natural sites. Grants have ranged between $10,000-$20,000. Deadline: June 30; Nov. 1.

Jordan Fundamentals Public School Grant Program

Nike Corporation invites applications to the Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program. The program recognizes outstanding teaching and instructional creativity in public schools that serve economically disadvantaged students. Applicants to the program must be public school teachers or para-professionals working with students in grades 1-12 and be employed by an accredited public school where at least 50% of the school's student population is eligible for the free or reduced school lunch program. Grants of $2,500 will be awarded. Deadline: June 30.

Self-Employment for Adults and Youth with Disabilities Research and Technical Assistance

The Department of Labor (DOL), Office of Disability Employment Policy, requests applications for Self-Employment for Adults and Youth with Disabilities Research and Technical Assistance. DOL has announced the availability of up to $5,000,000 to fund both a national technical assistance and research cooperative agreement, and multiple cooperative agreements for sub-national research and technical assistance pilot projects to investigate, develop and validate systems models likely to increase self-employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Deadline: Jul. 3.

United States Golf Association Grants

The United States Golf Association invites applications to the For the Good of the Game Grants Program. Grant awards are directed to instructional programs, caddie, or other work-based curriculum. The amount and duration of grants awarded vary. Deadline: July 7.

Compassion Capital Fund Communities Empowering Youth Program

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) accepts grant applications for the Compassion Capital Fund Communities Empowering Youth Program. ACF will award funds to build the organizational capacity of experienced organizations and their partnering faith-based and community organizations to better meet the needs of America's disadvantaged youth. The lead faith-based or community organization will assist its faith-based and community partners through technical assistance and training. Deadline: Jul. 10.

Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund Interfaith Grant

The Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund accepts applications for Interfaith Grants from religious institutions in the Gulf Coast impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Funds will be used to assist houses of worship in their rebuilding and recovery efforts. The program will provide up to $35,000 for capital repair and construction of houses of worship. Deadline: July 31.

Tobacco Policy Change Proposals

 The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation invites proposals for Tobacco Policy Change - A Collaborative for Healthier Communities and States. The national initiative provides resources and technical assistance for local, regional and nationally-based organizations and tribal groups to implement effective tobacco prevention policy initiatives. The 13-month grants will range from $75,000 - $150,000. NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program

The National Football League Youth Football Fund provides nonprofit, neighborhood-based organizations with financial and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of local football fields through the NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program. The program will award grants of up to $200,000 each for capital expenditures. Deadline: Aug. 31.

Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation Grants for Programs Serving Adults with Disabilities

The Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation funds program Grants in the areas of arts, advocacy, and education for adults with disabilities (over 22 years old). Support from other funding sources in the community for the program must be demonstrated in the grant application. Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000 each. Deadline: Sep. 15.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

The National Science Foundation accepts nominations for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) Program. The award identifies outstanding mathematics and science teachers, kindergarten through 12th grade, in each state and the four US jurisdictions. North Carolina Biotechnology Center Grants

The North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC) has posted the new Program Guidelines for the 2006-2007 Grants funding cycle. The NCBC invites applications and encourages pre-proposal reviews for these grants.

  • Collaborative Funding Grant for Postdoctoral Fellows. Deadlines: Jul. 12; Jan. 17, 2007.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Research Grants. Deadline: Oct. 4.
  • K-12 Mini Grants: Deadline: Jan. 24, 2007.
  • Biotechnology Event Sponsorship. Deadline: Rolling (at least 45 days before planned meeting).

North Carolina Biotechnology Center Institutionally Limited Grants

The North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC) has posted the new Program Guidelines for the 2006-2007 Grants funding cycle. The NCBC invites applications for two Institutionally Limited Grants and encourages pre-proposal reviews for these grants.

The Educational Enhancement program assists in the development of the activities, programs, resources, and personnel necessary for biotechnology education and training in well-defined educational settings statewide. Emphasis is placed on initiatives at the community college, undergraduate, and master's levels that support industrial workforce education and training. Deadlines: Jun. 12 (Duke internal notice of intent); Aug. 9 (external application).

The Institutional Development Grants provides research equipment or core facilities that serve at least six biotechnology related investigators at a North Carolina institution. Deadlines: Jun. 12 (Duke internal notice of intent); Aug. 23 (external application).

  • Description of proposed project.
  • Identification of those who will directly benefit (at Duke and elsewhere).

Predoctoral Research Training in Biostatistics

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) accepts applications to the Predoctoral Research Training Grant Program in Biostatistics. The program provides support for predoctoral training in biostatistical theory and evolving methodologies related to basic biomedical research, including, but not limited to, bioinformatics, genetics, molecular biology, cellular processes, and physiology, as well as epidemiological, clinical and behavioral studies. National Fish and Wildlife Foundation - Hurricane Wildlife Relief Fund

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation accepts applications to the newly created  Hurricane Wildlife Relief Fund for conservation restoration projects in the Gulf Coast states impacted by hurricanes. The minimum grant size is $70,000, with a preference for projects larger than $100,000. Deadline: Rolling.

NSF Supplement Opportunity: NSF-DOE Interaction in Environmental Molecular Sciences

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a Dear Colleague letter to invite NSF-supported PIs to apply for Supplements to existing awards funded by any of the participating Directorates and the Office of Polar Programs for research at the Department of Energy's (DOE) William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory in the area of environmental molecular sciences. Participants include the Directorates for Biological Sciences, Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Engineering, Geosciences, and Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Research Coordination Networks in Biological Sciences

The National Science Foundation seeks applications for Research Coordination Networks in Biological Sciences (RCN). The goal of this program is to encourage and foster interactions among scientists to create new research directions or advance a field. Innovative ideas for implementing novel networking strategies are especially encouraged. Groups of investigators will be supported to communicate and coordinate their research, training and educational activities across disciplinary, organizational, institutional, and geographical boundaries. The proposed networking activities should have a theme as a focus of its collaboration. Opportunities for Promoting Understanding through Synthesis

The National Science Foundation seeks applications for Opportunities for Promoting Understanding through Synthesis (OPUS). Three Division of Environmental Biology clusters (Ecological Biology, Ecosystem Science, and Population and Evolutionary Processes) encourage submission of proposals aimed at synthesizing a body of related research projects conducted by a single individual or group of investigators over an extended period. OPUS proposals will often be appropriately submitted in mid-to-late career, but will also be appropriate early enough in a career to produce unique, integrated insight useful both to the scientific community and to the development of the investigator's future work. In cases where multiple scientists have worked collaboratively, an OPUS award will provide support for collaboration on a synthesis. Deadlines: Jul 9, 2006; Jan. 9, 2007; Jul. 9, 2007

Aquaculture & Fisheries Collaborative Research Support Program

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks applications from US universities and colleges to serve as the Management Entity of an Aquaculture & Fisheries Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP). A pre-application conference will be held by USAID to discuss the Aquaculture & Fisheries CRSP RFA and to address questions. The award resulting from this RFA will be a Leader with Associates (LWA) Cooperative Agreement. USAID intends to issue a five-year award estimated at $8,900,000. Associate Awards are anticipated to be $3,000,000 over the life of the agreement for a total cumulative estimated amount at $11,900,000. Deadline: Jul. 10.

Cooperative Training Partnership in Aquatic Toxicology and Ecosystem Research

The Environmental Protection Agency seeks applications for Cooperative Training Partnership in Aquatic Toxicology and Ecosystem Research. Biological Research Collections

The National Science Foundation seeks applications for Biological Research Collections (BRC). The BRC Program provides support for biological collection enhancement, computerization of specimen-related data, research to develop better methods for specimen curation and collection management, and activities such as symposia and workshops to investigate support and management of biological collections. Biological collections supported include those housing natural history specimens and jointly curated collections such as frozen tissues and other physical samples, e.g. DNA libraries and digital images. Instrument Development for Biological Research

The National Science Foundation seeks applications for Instrument Development for Biological Research. The program supports the development of novel or of substantially improved instrumentation likely to have a significant impact on the study of biological systems at any level. The development of new, or substantial improvement of existing, software for the operation of instruments, analysis of data, or the analysis of images is also supported where these have the effect of improving instrument performance. Shell Marine Habitat Program Funding for Gulf of Mexico Projects

Through a partnership with the Shell Oil Company, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation provides Shell Marine Habitat Grants for projects that benefit marine habitat in and around the Gulf of Mexico. The project area includes the gulf coasts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, and the gulf coast of Florida from Tampa north and west through the panhandle. Grants will range from $50,000 to $200,000 each, minimum 1:1 match required. Deadline: Sep. 1 (pre-proposals).

Living Stock Collections

The National Science Foundation seeks applications for the Living Stock Collections (LSC) program. The LSC program supports operation of and improvements in outstanding collections of living organisms used in basic biological research. The program provides support for two types of projects. Short-term projects are one-time awards (up to 36 months) leading to innovative handling of living stocks or to well-defined improvements in existing collections, including those not otherwise supported by LSC. Long-term projects (up to 60 months) support ongoing operation of significant collections. Deadline: Sep. 6.

Funding News

Nominations sought for AACR Cancer Prevention Research Award

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation invites nominations for the annual AACR-Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention Research. The award will be given to a scientist residing in any country in the world for seminal contributions in basic, translational, clinical, epidemiological, or behavioral science investigations in cancer prevention research that have had a major impact on the field and stimulated new directions in this important area. The award recipient will present a major lecture during the International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, the premier annual international meeting on cancer prevention research. Deadline: Jun. 30.

ROSES-06 Amendment 10: Final text of the Living with a Star Program

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released Amendment 10 to Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES 2006), NNH06ZDA001N. The amendment issues the final text for Appendices B.7 and B.8. Deadlines: Jul. 31 (notice of intent); Aug. 31 (proposal).

  • Appendix B.7: Living with a Star Targeted Research and Technology. This program element solicits proposals leading to a physics-based understanding of the integral system linking the Sun to the Solar System both directly and via the heliosphere, planetary magnetospheres, and ionospheres.
  • Appendix B. 8: Living With a Star Targeted Research and Technology: Strategic Capability with the final text. This program element solicits proposals to develop a quantitative 3D model for the slowly evolving magnetic field of complex active region.

Health Sciences

Defense Sciences Research and Technology: Predicting Health and Disease

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has issued BAA 06-19, Addendum 4, Predicting Health and Disease (PHD). The PHD program will develop methods to assess whether an individual will develop an infectious disease, prior to the onset of disease symptoms. Achieving this will require a multi-disciplinary approach to diagnostics that includes, at the minimum, innovative data analytic methodologies coupled with traditional and non-traditional medical diagnostic parameters. Faculty Development: Integrated Technology into Nursing Education and Practice Initiative

The Health Resources and Services Administration solicits applications for nursing collaboratives that will partner with the government using a cooperative agreement mechanism for the Faculty Development: Integrated Technology into Nursing Education and Practice Initiative. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) invites applications for Silvio O. Conte Digestive Diseases Research Core Centers (DDRCCs). The DDRCCs are part of an integrated program of digestive and liver diseases research support provided by the NIDDK. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) invites applications for Clinical Nutrition Research Unit (CNRU) Core Centers. 2007 BWF Career Award for Medical Scientists

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) has reformulated its Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences (CABS) as a program exclusively targeting physician scientists. These Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) retain some of the basic features of CABS, including the institutional limits on the number of nominations that may be submitted. CAMS will provide $700 K over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. The postdoctoral/fellowship portion of the award should last 1-2 years, during which time the awardee may use up to $95 K per year, including up to $65 K per for salary support. The remainder of the award will be used for the faculty portion of the award. Candidates should have an M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., or equivalent clinical degree, and be citizens or permanent residents of the US or Canada. They must be clinical fellows, residents, instructors (non-tenure track), or postdoctoral researchers and have at least two years of research experience.

Predictive Science Academic Alliance Program

LAM Foundation Fellowships

THE LAM Foundation offers postdoctoral fellowship for the study of the cellular and molecular basis of the abnormal smooth muscle proliferation that occurs in the disease, Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). The LAM Post Doctoral Fellowship Awards provide a maximum of $50,000 per year renewable for up to two additional years. Deadlines: Sep. 15 (fall deadline), Mar. 15 (spring deadline).

Building the Science of Science Policy: Innovation, Investments and Outcomes

To build the science of science policy, National Science Foundation programs in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) will accept Supplement requests for active awards and proposals for Small Grants for Exploratory Research (SGERs). The goal of SBE's activities are to build a rigorous science of science policy manifest in new understandings of the human dynamics that underlie successful innovation; better understanding of the relations between workforce training and returns on research investments; and the development of the data, metrics and models needed to evaluate returns to private and public sector R&D investments. The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks applications for Methodology, Measurement, and Statistics (MMS). The program is an interdisciplinary program that supports the development of innovative methods and models for the social and behavioral sciences. The MMS Program welcomes proposals in general research and infrastructure activities; mid-career research fellowships; research on survey and statistical methodology; and doctoral dissertation research. Social Science Research Council - Abe Fellowship Program

The Social Science Research Council accepts applications for the Abe Fellowship. The fellowship encourages international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern. The program supports professional research in the social sciences or humanities on contemporary policy-relevant issues, especially those which promote a new level of intellectual cooperation between Japan and America. Funding for the program is provided by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. Applicants are invited to submit proposals for research in the social sciences or the humanities relevant to any one or combination of the following three themes: global issues; problems common to industrial and industrializing societies; and issues that pertain to US-Japan relations. The program provides Abe Fellows with 3-12 months of full-time support over a 24 month period. Deadline: Sep. 1.

US Institute of Peach 2006 Solicited Initiative

The US Institute of Peace invites applications for the 2006 Solicited Initiative. The Solicited initiative is restricted to projects that fit specific themes or topics identified in advance by the Institute of Peace.
