Download Issue: NEA Funding for Arts on Radio and Television The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) welcomes applications for NEA Funding for Arts on Radio and Television. Grants are available to support the development, production, and national distribution of radio and television programs on the arts. Deadline: Sep. 8. Association of Performing Arts Presenters -- Ensemble Theatre Travel Subsidy Grants The Association of Performing Arts Presenters' Ensemble Theatre Travel Subsidy Program provides Grants to theater directors, producers, presenters, managers, artists, and agents to see work by ensemble theater companies who have initiated a dialogue with them about a long-term partnership. In addition, artistic, production, education, publicity, or marketing staff at ensemble theater companies are eligible for funds to visit a potential host theater or arts presenter in order to effectively prepare for an engagement at least six to twelve months in advance. Deadline: Sep. 12. NEA International Literature Awards The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) invites applications for the NEA International Literature Awards. All projects must involve the translation of literary works from Greece or Spain into English and the promotion of those works to American readers. Authors must be born after 1946 and the works must be previously unpublished in English. Deadline: Sep. 14. Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Proposals The Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation accepts Proposals from composers, lyricists, and bookwriters, as well as nonprofit producing companies, to provide encouragement and financial assistance. The foundation's current priority is on individual creative artists working in musical theater. National Center for Family Literacy Toyota Family Literacy Program The National Center for Family Literacy will award five grants of $600,000 each to implement the Toyota Family Literacy Program, a highly successful literacy initiative benefiting Hispanic and other immigrant families. The program is seeking five school districts in communities with large or fast-growing Hispanic and other immigrant populations. Selected cities will receive grants in the amount of $350,000 for direct funding, training, and technical assistance. Deadline: June 30 (capability survey). Open Meadows Foundation Funding for Projects Benefiting Women and Girls The Open Meadows Foundation offers Grants up to $2,000 to projects that are designed and implemented by women and girls. The grants must reflect the diversity of the community served by the project in both its leadership and organization, promote building community power; and promote racial, social, economic, and environmental justice. Deadline: Aug. 15. Ronald McDonald House Charities -- Global Grant Program Ronald McDonald House Charities invites applications from global or national nonprofit organizations that help children read, provide nutritious after-school meals, offer life-changing surgeries, or help prevent life-threatening disease. Deadline: Aug. 28 (letter of inquiry). Women Helping Others Grants The WHO Foundation (Women Helping Others) provides Grants to organizations serving women and/or children in the US and Puerto Rico. Specific projects and programs addressing health, education, and social service needs are the foundation's priority. Deadline: Sep. 12. SeaWorld/Busch Gardens/Fujifilm Environmental Excellence Awards The Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks invites applications for the 2007 SeaWorld/Busch Gardens/Fujifilm Environmental Excellence Awards. The awards recognize outstanding efforts of students, teachers, and community groups across the US who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. Eight winning groups are selected each year to win $10,000. One environmental educator/leader each year receives $5,000. Deadline: Nov. 30.
Fund for Improvement of Postsecondary Education -- Comprehensive Program The Department of Education seeks applications for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education - Comprehensive Program. The program supports grants and cooperative agreements to improve postsecondary education opportunities. It encourages reforms, innovations, and improvements of postsecondary education that respond to problems of national significance and provide access to quality education for all. Mentoring Programs to Diversify the Mental Health HIV/AIDS Research Workforce through Innovative Educational Initiatives The National Institute of Health seeks applications for Mentoring Programs to Diversify the Mental Health HIV/AIDS Research Workforce through Innovative Educational Initiatives. These mentoring programs should be in the format of either an intensive institute or a network of established mentors and should address a thematic aspect of mental health HIV/AIDS research within an interdisciplinary or translational framework. Participant mentees: Doctoral and postdoctoral candidates and junior faculty level candidates from REM groups (African Americans, Hispanics, Native American/Alaska Natives, Asian/Pacific Islanders/Native Hawaiians) who will conduct NIMH-AIDS or NIAAA-AIDS relevant research and/or non-minority individuals, at these same levels, whose research focuses on HIV/AIDS disparities issues. Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) Opportunity for Furthering the Development of a Suite of Computer Programs for Modeling and Simulating Complex Cellular Biological Processes The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seeks to enter into a CRADA with a commercial partner to co-develop a suite of computer programs for modeling and simulating complex cellular biological processes. Integration of Development and Physiology: Mechanisms Shaping Animal Phenotypes The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a Dear Colleague letter to draw attention to an emerging area of research, Integration of Development and Physiology--Mechanisms Shaping Animal Phenotypes, that spans the traditional areas of developmental biology, and ecological and evolutionary physiology presently supported by the Division of Integrative Organismal Biology in the Directorate for Biological Sciences. Earth Sciences: Instrumentation and Facilities The National Science Foundation considers proposals through the Earth Sciences Instrumentation and Facilities Program for research support in several areas.
Planned research uses of requested instruments must include basic research on solid-Earth and surface-Earth processes. Deadlines: Sep. 14; Mar. 15, 2007. US Science Support Program Associated with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program The National Science Foundation (NSF), in collaboration with several international partners, accepts proposals for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), an international program of basic research in the marine geosciences. NSF seeks the services of a qualified provider to facilitate and enhance the participation of the US scientific community in all aspects of the IODP. The initial period of the award, to be administered as a Cooperative Agreement, is intended to cover the full period of IODP beginning on March 1, 2007 through September 30, 2013. Deadline: Sep. 20. The final submission date for applications to the National Institute of Nursing Research is Sep. 2, 2006. Demonstration Project for Identifying Individuals at High-Risk for Chronic Kidney Disease The Center for Disease Control and Prevention invites proposals for a Demonstration Project for Identifying Individuals at High-Risk for Chronic Kidney Disease in the US. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to initiate the development of standardized, state-based screening programs for the early detection and prediction of chronic kidney disease among high-risk individuals in the US. Deadlines: June 23 (letter of intent), July 7 (application). Establishing Comprehensive NCMHD Research Centers of Excellence (P60) The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) invites applications for Establishing Comprehensive NCMHD Research Centers (P60). These NCMHD research centers of excellence will focus primarily on minority health and health disparities research and secondarily on research training and community engagement and outreach. The centers are expected to explore biological, environmental, behavioral and social factors acting independently or dependently, across multiple social contexts, and across multiple social levels. Since Duke University may submit only one proposal in response to this solicitation, anyone interested in submitting a proposal is asked to forward the requested materials to Ken Macdonald in the Office of Research Support (kwmac@duke.edu, 681-5988) by July 5.

Long-Term Weight Maintenance: Basic and Clinical Studies The National Institutes of Health invite applications for Long-Term Weight Maintenance: Basic and Clinical Studies. Applications investigating mechanisms underlying weight stability and/or weight regain after intentional weight loss, as well as clinical studies investigating the role of behavioral, nutritional, exercise, or other interventions in enhancing long-term weight maintenance will be supported. Proteomics in Auditory Developmental and Disease Processes The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders seeks research application for Proteomics in Auditory Developmental and Disease Processes. The program seeks to promote the use of proteomic technologies to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of normal/abnormal auditory development, and maintenance, as well as specific disease states of hearing tissues and sensory organs. Ubiquitin and Ubiquitin-Like Modifications Regulating Disease Processes The National Institutes of Health invite investigator-initiated research projects focused on elucidating the various roles of Ubiquitin and Ubiquitin-Like Modifications Regulating Disease Processes in the development, normal physiology and/or disease progression in cells, organs, and tissues. The program supports research pertaining to diabetes, endocrine and metabolic diseases; nutritional disorders, obesity and digestive diseases; and kidney, urologic and hematologic diseases. American Health Assistance Foundation -- Alzheimer's Disease Research Program The American Health Assistance Foundation (AHAF) accepts applications to the Alzheimer's Disease Research program. The program supports promising AD research in fields ranging from molecular biology to epidemiology. To be eligible for grant funding, the Principal Investigator (PI) must hold the academic rank of assistant professor or higher. For Pilot Project Awards, the PI must hold the academic rank of assistant professor (or higher) or be a research associate with a parenthetical rank. (Senior postdocs are not eligible for Pilot Awards.) Research Fellowships are available to Postdoctoral Fellows only. Deadline: Oct. 13. Bayer Hemophilia Awards Program Education The Bayer Hemophilia Awards Program supports basic and clinical research and education in hemophilia. Through grants provided to early career investigators, fellows in training, and other hemophilia care professionals, the program seeks to support the next steps for the next generation of care and treatment options for people with hemophilia worldwide. Special Request for Applications: US-Middle East University Partnerships Program The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and the Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development and the Department of State, have issued a request for applications for the US-Middle East University Partnerships Program. HED will award up to four grants of up to $300,000 over a 3-year period to implement cooperative partnerships between higher education institutions in the US and Arab universities. Applications must demonstrate the ability to strengthen Arab universities' capacities in one of the following disciplines: Business Administration and Economics; Government; Legal Studies; Teacher/Educator Professional Development; and Journalism and Media. Council for International Exchange of Scholars -- Scholar-in-Residence Program The Council for International Exchange of Scholars administers the Worldwide Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program to bring visiting scholars and professionals from abroad to lecture at US colleges and universities for one semester or one academic year. In addition to teaching courses, scholars give campus-wide and community lectures, help initiate international programs, and contribute to curriculum development. The Searle Scholars Program has again invited Duke University to nominate two faculty members for its annual competition. This award is designed to support the independent research of exceptional young faculty in the fields of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences. Awards provide $80,000 per year for three years; funding for the second and third years will be contingent upon the submission of acceptable progress reports. Normally, 15 new awards will be made annually. Candidates should have begun their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2005. Appointments must be tenure-track. Specialized Centers of Interdisciplinary Research (SCOR) on Sex and Gender Factors Affecting Women's Health (P50) The National Institute of Health's Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) seeks to offer the Specialized Centers of Interdisciplinary Research (SCOR) on Sex and Gender Factors Affecting Women's Health for the second time. These centers will provide opportunities for interdisciplinary approaches to advancing studies on how sex and gender factors affect women's health. Each SCOR should develop a research agenda bridging basic and clinical research on sex/gender factors underlying a health issue that affects women. The ORWH and its funding partners intend to commit at least $10 million in FY 2007 to fund approximately 10 grants in response to this RFA. Physical Sciences & Engineering University Research Initiatives, Part II The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) announces Part II of its Fiscal Year 2006 University Research Initiatives (NURI) Program to enhance the capabilities of US universities to perform research and related education in science and engineering areas critical to our mission and the national defense. Behavioral and Social Research on Disasters and Health (R01) The National Institutes of Health invites applications for Behavioral and Social Research on Disasters and Health (R01). The National Institute on Aging is interested in research on the elderly in disasters, especially elderly residents of institutions and frail elderly in the community. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development is interested in research on children and other vulnerable populations in disasters. The National Institute of Nursing Research is interested in research that will develop interventions that will improve outcomes for persons affected by natural and man-made disasters.
