NIH Intramural Research Training

The National Institutes of Health offers two Intramural Research Training Awards programs. The Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) and the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) Fellowships provide opportunities for recent college graduates to spend a year engaged in biomedical investigation at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland and selected off-campus locations. The Technical Intramural Research Training Award fellowships are designed to produce a cadre of highly trained support professionals capable of performing the latest advanced techniques in a research laboratory. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) offers the Wood-Whelan Research Fellowships to support young biochemists and molecular biologists who need to travel to other laboratories in the IUBMB and International Council for Science (ICSU) region for the purpose of carrying out experiments that require special techniques or for other forms of scientific collaboration or advanced training. Los Alamos National Laboratory Graduate Research Program

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) invite applications for the Graduate Research Assistant, a year-round educational program which provides students with relevant research experience while they are pursuing a graduate degree. Marine Science and Oceanography at Bermuda Biological Station

NSF Science and Society Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants

The National Science Foundation invites applications for the Science and Society program's Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants. S&S considers proposals that examine questions that arise in the interactions of engineering, science, technology, and society. There are four components: Ethics and Values in Science, Engineering and Technology; History and Philosophy of Science, Engineering and Technology; Social Studies of Science, Engineering and Technology; and Studies of Policy, Science, Engineering and Technology. S&S provides funds for dissertation research expenses not normally available through the student's university. Lung Health Research Dissertation Grants

Environmental Leadership

The Environmental Leadership Program offers the Environmental Leadership Fellowships, as part of ELP's highly experiential and innovative national initiative that aims to build the leadership capacity of the environmental movement's most promising emerging professionals. Each year, a new class of 20-25 fellows is chosen to receive intensive training, institutional support, and mentoring for a three-year period. Fellows gain access to funding to pursue further skill training and develop new projects. Applicants must commit to participating in four retreats. The American Australian Association's Education Fund (AAAEF) makes annual awards available to US fellows to pursue studies in Australia. NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

The National Science Foundation (NSF) solicits applications for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, including Women in Engineering and Computer and Information Science Awards. Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Biological Sciences

The National Science Foundation Directorate for Biological Sciences invites applications for Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research in order to improve the overall quality of the research, to allow doctoral candidates to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings away from the home campus, and to provide opportunities for greater diversity in collecting and creativity in analyzing data than would be possible using only locally available resources. Marine Resources

NRSAs in Complementary and Alternative Medicine

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) plans to provide Predoctoral Research Training in Complementary and Alternative Medicine to individuals for research training in specified areas of biomedical and behavioral research related to Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) to help ensure that highly trained scientists will be available in adequate numbers and in appropriate research areas and fields to meet the nation's health research needs. Applicants must be enrolled in a program leading to a research doctorate or a combined clinical and research degree. Prior to formal submission of a fellowship application, an applicant must arrange for appointment to an appropriate institution and acceptance by a sponsor to supervise the research training experience.
