General Listings

Trinity College Undergraduate Research Website -- Provides information on a variety of programs, including Visible Thinking, an opportunity for undergraduate researchers at Duke to present their work, held each April.

Dean's Summer Research Fellowship -- Provides up to $2,500 for undergraduate research in the arts and sciences. Deadline: March 7, 2007.

Undergraduate Research Support Program -- Awards of up to $350 to encourage involvement of Duke undergraduates in research and original scholarship with faculty. Approximately 50 awards are made each fall and spring semester.

Dannenberg Mentorships -- The Academic Advising Center offers these awards of $350 to support participation by pre-major students in ongoing extracurricular research or other academic projects or events in collaboration with a faculty member.

Mellon Mays Undegraduate Fellowship Program -- A program funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in order to broaden the pool of those pursuing academic careers in higher education. Each year, five sophomore students are selected. Fellows receive summer research support, term-time stipends, and loan repayment for those who enroll in certain Ph.D. programs.

Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research -- Awards are made to support research in all areas of science and engineering. Awards are made in amounts up to a maximum of $1,000 ($2,500 for vision-related research; $5,000 for astronomy). Annual deadlines: March 15, October 15.

Federal Internships -- A listing of internships with federal government provided by the office of Congressman Melvin Watt.

White House Internship Program -- Provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the daily operations of the White House and explore public service.

International

International Opportunities from Duke's Global Gateway -- Extensive listing of undergraduate international opportunities, including the Fulbright Program.

Dorot Social Change in Israel Awards - New in 2007, this program from the Dorot Foundation is open to all undergraduates at U.S. colleges and universities. Provides $10 K to individuals who develop (with Israel-based mentor and home-institution advisor) a project promoting progressive social change in Israel. Deadline: February 15, 2007.

Natural Sciences & Engineering

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) -- Undergraduate research opportunities at Department of Energy labs. Other relevant opporunities, including Faculty and Student Teams (FaST), may also be found at DOE's Workforce Development Program website.

The Howard Hughes Forum and Howard Hughes Fellowships -- For undergraduate independent research in the biological, chemical, or neural sciences. Last deadline: October 6, 2005.

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education -- A listing of educational and research experiences for undergraduates nationwide.

Oak Ridge National Laboratories -- Research and educational experiences at ORNL and elsewhere.

Organization for Tropical Studies -- Offers both semester and summer programs for undergraduates engaged in field-based, experiential learning at various sites in Costa Rica.

Research Fellows Program in the Biological Sciences -- An eight-week summer research opportunity for rising sophomores. Deadline: February 19, 2007.

Fellowships and Research Opportunities in Biology -- A listing of opportunities at Duke and elsewhere.

Collegiate Inventors Competition -- Promotes exploration in invention, science, engineering, technology, and other creative endeavors. Each year, one winning undergraduate student (or student team) receives $10,000 (there is also a graduate winner or team). One grand prize winner receives $25,000. Academic advisors of winning entries receive $3,000. Deadline: June 1, 2007.

Humanities & Social Sciences

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace -- Junior Fellows provide research assistance to Associates working on the Carnegie Endowment’s projects, such as non-proliferation, democracy building, international economics, migration and Russian/Eurasian issues. Eligible applicants are graduating seniors and recent graduates. Deadline: January 15th (Note: this is the deadline for Duke nominations to be sent to the Endowment - for details on Duke's internal application process, please contact Duke's liaison for the Junior Fellows program, Suzanne Pierce).

Learning through Experience, Action, Partnership, and Service (LEAPS) --  a Duke student-run, community service organization which focuses on service learning.

Leonard M. Rieser Research Fellowship -- fellowship is intended to help undergraduates explore the connections between science, technology, global security, and public policy (science students are especially encouraged to apply). Awards ($2.5 K - $ 5 K) may be used over the course of one year (12 months) to support academic research or professional development, in the United States or abroad. Deadline: March 15, 2007.

Service Opportunities in Leadership (SOL) -- Includes a gateway course, community-based research (CBR) projects, and a capstone course. SOL offers $3,000 grants for CBR projects. Last deadline: November 1, 2006.

Women's Studies -- The Program offers several awards for up to $1,500 for undergraduate (and graduate) students. Awards are given in areas including gender-related research and community service.

Other Information Resources

Project Kaleidoscope -- An informal national alliance of individuals, institutions, and organizations (including Duke) committed to strengthening undergraduate programs in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.

National Conferences on Undergraduate Research -- an association supportive of college and university faculty, students, administrators, and others interested in undergraduate research, scholarship, creative activity, and related issues.
