The Office of the Vice Provost for Research has overall responsibility
for facilitating the research enterprise at Duke University. The Vice
Provost for Research works closely with the Provost, his staff, and the
Deans on research development and policy. The Vice Provost supervises
the Office of Research Support (ORS) and manages the Instrumentation Fund.
In addition, he participates in the management and allocation of research
funds allocated by the Provost. He oversees campus-wide research planning
efforts. This includes working with the Office
of Science and Technology (OST) to encourage and support the development
and marketing of Duke’s intellectual property.
ORS serves as the grants-and-contracts office for the campus (i.e., non-Medical
Center) components of Duke University, with responsibility for all pre-award
activities, as well as certain post-award activities, as detailed below.
Broadly, its role is to facilitate the funding process by providing information
on and assuring compliance with both sponsor and University policies and
procedures. Specific functions include the following:
- Disseminating information about funding opportunities and funding
trends.
- Presenting workshops on topics such as funding searches, proposal
development, and electronic research administration.
- Coordinating Duke's submissions for institutionally limited funding
opportunities.
- Reporting on Sponsored Research Activity at Duke
- Reviewing and approving all proposals for campus components, with
the following exceptions: construction and endowment proposals, which
are handled by the Office
of Corporate and Foundation Relations (OCFR); and fellowship proposals,
which do not require review or approval by any University office if
the funds are awarded directly to an individual.
- Accepting grants and negotiating contracts on behalf of the University.
- Issuing subcontracts.
- Serving as the principal liaison between the University and its sponsors.
- Approving programmatic and budgetary changes to sponsored projects.
- Administering the Committee for the Use
of Human Subjects in Non-medical Research.
- Working with the Vice Provost for Research and the Research Policy
Committee to develop and implement research policies and procedures.
