December 2006 Awards*

Roni Avissar of Civil Engineering has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "The Impacts of Tropical Deforestation on Regional and Global Hydroclimate." Total funding will be $250,180 over 24 months.

Linda M. Burton of the Social Science Research Institute has received an award from the Johns Hopkins University for a project entitled "Welfare Reform and the Well Being of Children." Total funding will be $158,104 over 12 months.

Linda M. Burton of Social Science Research Institute has received an award from the Johns Hopkins University for a project entitled "Multi-city study of the effects of welfare reform on children using the extensive three-city study ethnographic dataset." Total funding will be $24,138 over 6 months.

Leslie M. Collins of Electrical Engineering has received an award from FMA Research, Inc. for a project entitled "Support for Lighting Ensor Development and Deployment." Total funding will be $5,000 over 17 months.

Stefano Curtarolo of Mechanical Engineering has received an award from the American Chemical Society for a project entitled "Is Superlubrication Possible in Engines? Characterization of the Adsorption of Hydrocarbons on Quasicrystal Surfaces." Total funding will be $40,000 over 32 months.

Bruce R. Donald of Computer Science has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Automated NMR Assignment and Protein Structure Determination." Total funding will be $166,618 over 9 months.

Joel L. Fleishman of Public Policy Studies has received an award from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation for a project entitled "Publicity and Marketing: The Foundation - A Great American Secret." Total funding will be $55,000 over 12 months.

Gary Gereffi of Sociology has received an award from Industry Canada for a project entitled "Metrics and Indicators for Global Value Chains." Total funding will be $22,243 over 7 months.

Alfred T. Goshaw of Physics has received an award from the Department of Energy for a project entitled "Research in High Energy Physics at Duke University." Total funding will be $3,156,000 over 35 months.

Gabriele C. Hegerl of Earth & Ocean Sciences  has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "Detection and attribution of anthropogenic changes in climate extremes and variability." Total funding will be $410,819 over 36 months.

Robert B. Jackson of the Nicholas School has received an award from the Department of Energy for a project entitled "Southeastern Regional Center of the National Institute for Climate Change Research." Total funding will be $129,918 over 47 months.

L. Gregory Jones of Divinity has received an award from the Duke Endowment for a project entitled "To Assist with a Course of Study for Hispanic/Latino Students." Total funding will be $100,000 over 13 months.

Kenneth C. Land of Sociology has received an award from the Foundation for Child Development for a project entitled "Developing a Child Well Being Index." Total funding will be $179,724 over 24 months.

Karl G. Linden of Civil Engineering has received an award from the WateReuse Association for a project entitled "Enhanced Disinfection of Adenoviruses with UV Irradiation." Total funding will be $128,692 over 24 months.

Peter E. Malin of Earth & Ocean Sciences has received an award from the US Geological Survey for a project entitled "SAFOD-site Crustal Property, Fault Guided Wave, and Tremor Studies Using Existing Surface Array and Borehole Seismic Data." Total funding will be $59,532 over 12 months.

Kenneth G. Manton of Demographic Studies has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Functional and Health Changes of the Elderly (Supplement)." Total funding will be $344,965 over 1 month.

Keith G. Meador of Theology & Medicine has received an award from the Duke Endowment for a project entitled "Congregational Nursing and Health Ministries." Total funding will be $200,000 over 13 months.

Kevin A. Pelphrey of Psychology and Neuroscience has received an award from the National Alliance for Autism Research for a project entitled "Functional Neuroimaging of Children with Autism." Total funding will be $64,000 over 36 months.

Andrew J. Read of the Marine Lab has received an award from Geo-Marine, Inc. for a project entitled "Long-Term Monitoring of Protected Species in USWTR." Total funding will be $949,103 over 19 months.

Read of the Marine Lab has received an award from MCAS Cherry Point Environmental Affairs for a project entitled "Real-Time Acoustic Monitoring of Bottlenose Dolphins in and around the Brant Island Shoal Bombing Target (BT-9) and the Piney Island Bombing Range (BT-11)." Total funding will be $121,284 over 12 months.

Connie M. Shelton of the Duke Divinity Field Education Program has received an award from the Duke Endowment for a project entitled "2007 Spring & Fall Scholarships to Student Pastors and Assistant Pastors Programs." Total funding will be $1,226,200 over 13 months.

Ronald G. Witt of History has received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a project entitled "Petrarch and Provence: Between Seclusion and the World (Supplement)." Total funding will be $1,769 over 12 months.
