Holly Ackerman of Duke University Libraries has received an award from the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation for a project entitled "Caribbean Maritime Migration: A Comparison of State Practice and Human Rights Standards." Total funding will be $4,000 over 12 months.

Pankaj K. Agarwal of Computer Science has received an award from the Department of Education for a project entitled "Doctoral Program in Management and Analysis of Large Data Acquired from Sensors." Total funding will be $383,643 over 36 months.

Shivnath Babu of Computer Science has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "CAREER: Querying and Controlling Systems (REU Supplement)." Total funding will be $6,000 over 60 months.

Kathryn W. Bradley of the School of Law has received an award from the Knight Foundation for a project entitled "The Court of Public Opinion - The Practice and Ethics of Trying Cases in the Media." Total funding will be $76,000 over 12 months.

Hubert Bray of Mathematics has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "Geometric Analysis Applied to General Relativity." Total funding will be $202,985 over 36 months.

Nenad Bursac of Biomedical Engineering has received an award from the American Heart Association for a project entitled "Tissue Engineered Two-Dimnesional Heart Slice: The Role of Tissue Architecture in the Dynamics of Cardiac Reentry." Total funding will be $40,000 over 24 months.

Nenad Bursac of Biomedical Engineering has received an award from the American Heart Association for a project entitled "A Novel Cell Culture Model of Cardiac Fibrosis: Systematic Studies of Cardiac Arrhythmias." Total funding will be $40,000 over 24 months.

Mark A. Chaves of the Social Science Research Institute has received an award from the University of Arizona for a project entitled "National Congregations Study." Total funding will be $181,818 over 28 months.

James S. Clark of the Nicholas School has received a Dissertation Improvement Grant from the National Science Foundation for graduate student Michelle Hersh, for a project entitled "The Role of Seedling Pathogens in Temperate Forest Recuitment." Total funding will be $11,554 over 24 months.

Thomas J. Crowley of Earth & Ocean Sciences has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "South Pacific SST Oscillations and Climate." Total funding will be $36,060 over 12 months.

Xinnian Dong of Biology has received an award from the Department of Agriculture for a project entitled "A Systems Approach to Broad-Spectrum Disease Resistance Using NPR1-Mediated Gene Expression." Total funding will be $399,711 over 36 months.

Christine Drea of Biological Anthropology has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "Patterns of lemur reproductive and behavioral development (Supplement)." Total funding will be $14,928 over 1 month.

Total funding will be $4,000 over 12 months.

Patrick N. Halpin of the Nicholas School has received an award from Conservation International for a project entitled "Geospatial Analysis of Discharge Avoidance Areas." Total funding will be $11,770 over 3 months.

David E. Hinton of the Nicholas School has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Aquatic Animal Models for Human Health Studies." Total funding will be $25,000 over 12 months.

Laurens E. Howle of Mechanical Engineering has received an award from West Chester University for a project entitled "Computer Aided Design and Manufacture of Biologically-Inspired Hydrodynamic Control Surfaces." Total funding will be $105,347 over 12 months.

Joseph A. Izatt of Biomedical Engineering has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Molecular Optical Coherence Tomography for Monitoring Cancer Therapy." Total funding will be $141,318 over 36 months.

Robert B. Jackson of the Nicholas School has received an award from the Department of Energy for a project entitled "Southeastern Regional Center of the National Institute for Climatic Change Research (Supplement)." Total funding will be $1,795,988 over 41 months.

Andrew Janiak of Philosophy has received an award from the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation for a project entitled "Isaac Newton in International and Inderdisciplinary Perspective." Total funding will be $1,100 over 12 months.

Miranda of the Nicholas School has received a program-project grant award from the Environmental Protection Agency, for a program entitled "Southern Center on Environmentally-Driven Disparities in Birth Outcomes." Total funding will be $7,735,620 over 49 months. It includes the following projects:

Timothy H. Profeta of the Nicholas Institute has received an award from Environmental Defense for a project entitled "10,000 Ton Project." Total funding will be $17,879 over 3 months.

Arti K. Rai of the School of Law has received an award from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation for a project entitled "University Software Study." Total funding will be $77,900 over 27 months.

William M. Reichert of the Center for Biomchemical Engineering has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "The University Program in Biomolecular and Tissue Engineering." Total funding will be $1,948,220 over 60 months.

Daniel Rittschof of the Marine Lab has received an award from the Office of Naval Research for a project entitled "Barnacles for Antifouling, Foul-Release and Adhesion Research." Total funding will be $243,441 over 44 months.

Kimerly R. Rorschach of the Art Museum has received an award from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for a project entitled "Birth of the Cool: The Paintings of Barkley L. Hendricks." Total funding will be $50,000 over 13 months.

Dominic M. Sachsenmaier of History has received an award from the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation for a project entitled "Translation Project in the Field of Sino-Western Cultural Relations." Total funding will be $5,000 over 12 months.

Purnima Shah of Dance has received an award from the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation for a project entitled "The Garba Dance and Goddess Worship in Gujarat, India." Total funding will be $2,000 over 12 months.

David R. Sherwood of Biology has received an award from the Pew Scholars Program for a project entitled "Functional Genomic and Live-cell Image Analysis of Cell-invasive Behavior in C. Elegans." Total funding will be $240,000 over 48 months.

Xiaobai Sun of Computer Science has received an award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for a project entitled "FANTOM: Algorithm-Architecture Codesign for High Performance Signal and Image Processing (Supplement)." Total funding will be $1,700,001 over 26 months.

John W. Terborgh of the Nicholas School has received an award from the Blue Moon Fund for a project entitled "Combatting Illegal Logging in South America (CITES)." Total funding will be $56,000 over 12 months.

Charles D. Thompson, Jr. of Documentary Studies has received an award from the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation for a project entitled "Pueblos Hermanos/Brother Towns." Total funding will be $5,000 over 12 months.

David C. Toole of the Divinity School has received an award from the Duke Endowment for a project entitled "Thriving Rural Communities: Assessing a Renewing the Health of Clergy, Cong. & Communities in Rural NC." Total funding will be $1,262,655 over 13 months.

Kishor S. Trivedi of Electrical Engineering has received an award from the Jet Propulsion Lab for a project entitled "Classifying Software Faults to Improve Fault Detection Effectiveness." Total funding will be $192,000 over 16 months.

Rytas J. Vilgalys of Biology has received a Dissertation Improvement Grant from the National Science Foundation for graduate student Gregory Bonito, for a project entitled "Systematics and Phylogeography of Truffles (Tuber)." Total funding will be $12,000 over 24 months.

Adam P. Wax of Biomedical Engineering has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Assessing Deployment of Microbicidal Gels With Label-Free Optical Measurement." Total funding will be $422,840 over 24 months.

Richard A. White of Duke Gardens has received an award from the Oak Foundation for a project entitled "Healing and Hope Through Science." Total funding will be $23,000 over 12 months.
