October 2004 Awards*

John D. Albertson of Civil Engineering has received an award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for a project entitled "Constrained Regional Land-Atmosphere Exchange Predictions in Semi-Arid Regions: Advancing Ecohydrologic Data Assimilation." Total funding will be $48,000 over 23 months.

Celia J. Bonaventura of the Marine Lab has received an award from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine for a project entitled "Functional Analysis of Engineered Hemoglobins." Total funding will be $142,984 over 12 months.

Alan E. Boudreau of Earth & Ocean Sciences has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "Quantitative Modeling of Gas Migration in Layered Intrusions." Total funding will be $168,875 over 24 months.

Gregory Britz of Documentary Studies has received an award from the NC Arts Council for a project entitled "Citizenship, Justice, and Belonging Project." Total funding will be $5,150 over 8 months.

Sherryl A. Broverman of Biology has received an award from the Association of American Colleges and Universities for a project entitled "Duke University SENCER Team Application." Total funding will be $3,500 over 16 months.

Stephen A. Cohn of Duke University Press has received an award from the J. Paul Getty Trust for a project entitled "Objects/Histories: Critical Perspectives on Art, Material Culture, and Representation." Total funding will be $220,000 over 36 months.

Robert M. Cook-Deegan of the Center for Genome Ethics, Law, and Policy has received a program-project grant award from the National Institutes of Health, for a program entitled "Duke Center for the Study of Public Genomics." Total funding will be $949,113 over 58 months. It includes the following projects:

- a project headed by Allen E. Buchanan, which will receive total funding of $117,482.
- a project headed by Robert M. Cook-Deegan, which will receive total funding of $78,055.
- a project headed by Robert M. Cook-Deegan, which will receive total funding of $226,395.
- a project headed by Arti K. Rai, which will receive total funding of $204,703.
- a project headed by Jerome H. Reichman, which will receive total funding of $118,041.
- a project headed by Huntington F. Willard, which will receive total funding of $204,437.


Thomas J. Crowley of Earth & Ocean Sciences has received an award from the Joint Oceanographic Institute for a project entitled "Salary for Stephen Obrachta during Expedition 303 North Atlantic 1." Total funding will be $10,809 over 3 months.

A. Leigh DeNeef of English has received an award from the Council of Graduate Schools for a project entitled "Evaluating and Enhancing Responsible Conduct of Research Training with Graduate Students and Faculty in the Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences at Duke University." Total funding will be $15,000 over 15 months.

Jeffrey T. Glass of the Center for Biologically Inspired Materials and Material Systems has received an award from MCNC for a project entitled "Distributed Sensors Lab." Total funding will be $125,000 over 12 months.

Warren M. Grill of Biomedical Engineering has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Selective Electrical Stimulation of Thalamic Neurons." Total funding will be $346,185 over 12 months.

Bobby D. Guenther of the Fitzpatrick Center has received an award from Battelle for a project entitled "International Workshop on Computational Imaging, Biophotonics and Nanophotonics." Total funding will be $26,773 over 10 months.

Roy B. Kelly of the Duke Center for International Development has received an award from the Government of Uganda for a project entitled "Uganda: Second Local Government Development Program (LGDP-II)." Total funding will be $73,904 over 3 months.

Jeffrey L. Krolik of Electrical Engineering has received an award from the Office of Naval Research for a project entitled "Wide-Band Multipath Depth Estimation and Partially Adaptive Space-Time Processing for Active Sonar." Total funding will be $150,000 over 36 months.

Kevin S. Labar of Cognitive Neuroscience has received an award from the Alzheimer's Association for a project entitled "Early Detection of Amygdala Dysfunction in Alzheimer's Disease." Total funding will be $99,000 over 24 months.

Richard A. MacPhail of Chemistry has received an award from the McGraw-Hill Companies for a project entitled "Development and Use of Computer Animation in Chemistry 21/22." Total funding will be $5,000 over 9 months.

Peter E. Malin of Earth & Ocean Sciences has received an award from the Department of Energy for a project entitled "ICEPKAP 2004: A Collaborative Joint Geophysical Imaging Project at Krafla & IDDP." Total funding will be $170,384 over 31 months.

Kenneth G. Manton of Demographic Studies has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Functional and Health Changes of the Elderly (Supplement)." Total funding will be $229,786 over 12 months.

Kenneth G. Manton of Demographic Studies has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Center for Longitudinal Analysis in Medical Demography - Administrative Supplement for Close Down Funds (Supplement) - Revised." Total funding will be $22,928 over 9 months.

George L. McLendon of Chemistry has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Understanding the Apoptosis Signal." Total funding will be $1,121,763 over 47 months.

David Needham of the Center for Biologically Inspired Materials and Material Systems has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled "Engineering Biology at the Nanoscale." Total funding will be $63,795 over 6 months.

H. Frederik Nijhout of Biology has received an award from the University of Puerto Rico for a project entitled "The developmental architecture of wing pattern variation in Heliconiuserato." Total funding will be $24,640 over 8 months.

Seog H. Oh of Physics has received an award from the Department of Energy for a project entitled "Research in High Energy Physics at Duke University (Supplement)." Total funding will be $10,000 over 26 months.

Sule Ozev of Electrical Engineering has received an award from the Semiconductor Research Corporation for a project entitled "Non-invasive Water-level Self-Checking Methods for State-of-the-Art RF Transceiver Architectures." Total funding will be $195,095 over 12 months.

Emilio A. Parrado of Sociology has received an award from the Department of Agriculture for a project entitled "Nonmetro Hispanic Population Growth and Public Schooling." Total funding will be $15,000 over 24 months.

Kathy A. Silbiger of Duke Performances has received an award from the NC Arts Council for a project entitled "Season/Series Support 2004-2005." Total funding will be $13,000 over 11 months.

David R. Smith of Electrical Engineering has received an award from Boeing Company for a project entitled "Negative Index Materials." Total funding will be $75,000 over 9 months.

Martin D. Smith of the Nicholas School has received an award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for a project entitled "Trophic Portfolios in Commercial Fishing: A Finance-based Approach to Ecosystem Management with an Application to the Chesapeake Bay." Total funding will be $48,256 over 24 months.

Eric P. Spana of DCMB has received an award from BASF Corporation for a project entitled "Functional Genomics for Insecticide Research." Total funding will be $95,000 over 12 months.

P. J. Eric Stallard of Demographic Studies has received an award from the National Council on Aging Development Corporation for a project entitled "Decision Support Software for Financing Long Term Care." Total funding will be $45,000 over 5 months.

Dean L. Urban of the Nicholas School has received an award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation for a project entitled "Doris Duke Conservation Fellows Program." Total funding will be $275,000 over 36 months.

Jacob L. Vigdor of the Center for Child and Family Policy has received an award from the William T. Grant Foundation for a project entitled "Peer and Neighborhood Influences on Youth and Adolescent Development." Total funding will be $300,000 over 60 months.
