Philip N. Benfey of DCMB has received an award from the Human Frontiers of Science Program for a project entitled “Genetic and Molecular Analysis of the Short-Root Radial Patterning Pathway in the Arabidopsis Root.” Total funding will be $127,800 over 36 months.

Fred K. Boadu of Civil Engineering has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “Petrophysical Characterization of Saturated and Unsaturated Soils Using Electrical Geophysical Method: Artificial Neural Network Approach.” Total funding will be $144,713 over 24 months.

David J. Brady of the Fitzpatrick Center has received an award from the Army Research Office for a project entitled “Referencing Structure Tomography for Ubiquitous and Efficient Human Tracking and Identification.” Total funding will be $1,650,381 over 39 months.

Gregory Britz of Documentary Studies has received an award from the National Historical Pub. & Rec. Comm. for a project entitled “Preservation of W. Eugene Smith Jazz Loft Recordings, 1957-1964.” Total funding will be $114,652 over 12 months.

Tanya Chartrand of the Fuqua School of Business has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled “Differences between Conscious and Non-conscious Goal Pursuit.” Total funding will be $77,000 over 9 months.

Susan E. Chen of Economics has received an award from the Northwestern University / University of Chicago Joint Center for Poverty Research for a project entitled “An Evaluation of the Social Security Disability Insurance Program: The Effect on the Labor Supply of Applicants & Their Spouses.” Total funding will be $29,992 over 12 months.

Ashutosh Chilkoti of the Center for Biologically Inspired Materials and Material Systems has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled “Nanophotonics for Select Agent Detection.” Total funding will be $3,204,085 over 60 months.

Robert L. Clark Jr. of the Center for Biologically Inspired Materials and Material Systems has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “IGERT: Graduate Training in Biologically Inspired Materials (Supplement).” Total funding will be $32,400 over 51 months.

Robert T. Clemen of the Fuqua School of Business has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “Prescriptive Models for Improving Subjective Probability Judgements.” Total funding will be $217,330 over 36 months.

Larry S. Corder of Demographic Studies has received an award from the National Institute on Aging for a project entitled “Exceptional Human Longevity in the National Long Term Care Survey.” Total funding will be $77,000 over 12 months.

Richard T. Di Giulio of the Nicholas School has received an award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Science for a project entitled “Supplement to the Transgenic Fish Facility to Initiate Microarray Research with Zebrafish for the Duke Superfund Basic Research Center.” Total funding will be $24,258 over 18 months.

Gary S. Dwyer of the Division of Earth and Ocean Sciences has received an award from the US Geological Survey for a project entitled “Trace Elements/Isotopic Analysis on Ostracodes and Benthic Foraminfer Shells.” Total funding will be $36,805 over 12 months.

Richard B. Fair of Electrical Engineering has received an award from BioMachines Inc. for a project entitled “A Microfluidic Platform for Routing Biological Fluids Between Two Incompatible Platforms (supplement).” Total funding will be $29,388 over 4 months.

Henri P. Gavin of Civil Engineering has received an award from the Department of Commerce for a project entitled “GIS Application in Risk Management.” Total funding will be $8,400 over 12 months.

Christina Gibson of the Center for Child and Family Policy has received an award from Northwestern University for a project entitled “The Well-Being of Low-Income Families: Qualitative and Quantitative Perspectives.” Total funding will be $14,662 over 11 months.

Kenneth C. Hall of Mechanical Engineering has received an award from the Universal Technology Corporation for a project entitled “ISUAAAT Support.” Total funding will be $10,390 over 1 month.

Joseph A. Izatt of Biomedical Engineering has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled “Engineering Optimization of Fourier Domain OCT Systems.” Total funding will be $451,200 over 24 months.

Sherman A. James of Public Policy Studies has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled “Hypertension in Black Americans: A Lifesource Approach.” Total funding will be $381,141 over 10 months.

Sonke Johnsen of Biology has received an award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for a project entitled “Mathematical Model of the Visual Abilities of Sea Turtles and Pelagic Fishes.” Total funding will be $39,476 over 3 months.

Bruce B. Lawrence of Religion has received an award from North Carolina State University for a project entitled “Connection and Comparison Situating South Asia Regionally.” Total funding will be $95,000 over 12 months.

Alvin Lebeck of Computer Science has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “ITR: Nanoarchitecture: Balancing Regularity, Complexity, and Defect Tolerance using DNA for Nanoeletronic Integration.” Total funding will be $1,200,000 over 36 months.

Joseph McPherson of Sociology has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “The Relationship Between Networks and Voluntary Groups: A Proposal for Replication of the General Social Survey Voluntary Organization and Network Modules.” Total funding will be $243,000 over 12 months.

Ellen Mickiewicz of Public Policy Studies has received an award from the Library of Congress for a project entitled “Open World Program: The Center for Russian Leadership 2003-2004.” Total funding will be $172,386 over 13 months.

Fred L. Mowry of the Nicholas School has received an award from the Environmental Protection Agency for a project entitled “A Report on Seasonal Fluxes of Terpenoid Compounds from a PINUS TEADA Plantation.” Total funding will be $76,900 over 12 months.

John F. Oates of Library Administration has received an award from the University of Michigan for a project entitled “Advanced Papyrological Information System.” Total funding will be $20,000 over 24 months.

Kenneth H. Reckhow of the Nicholas School has received an award from North Carolina State University for a project entitled “Water Quality Indicators: Nutrient Impacts on Chlorophyll A or Algae Species Composition.” Total funding will be $94,474 over 24 months.

David C. Rubin of Psychological and Brain Sciences has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled “Neuroimaging of Autobiographical Memory.” Total funding will be $26,880 over 12 months.

Frank A. Sloan of the Ctr for Health Policy, Law, and Mgmt has received an award from Columbia University for a project entitled “Reinsurance Markets and Public Policy.” Total funding will be $67,000 over 10 months.

David Sorensen of Duke Press has received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a project entitled “The Carlyle Letters Project.” Total funding will be $150,000 over 33 months.

Timothy Strauman of Psychology: Social & Health Sciences has received an award from the National Institute of Mental Health for a project entitled “Self/Brain/Behavior Systems in Depression.” Total funding will be $1,044,511 over 34 months.

Carlo Tomasi of Computer Science has received an award from Intelligent Automation, Inc. for a project entitled “Dynamic Perimeter Surveillance by Swarms of Small Robotic Vehicles.” Total funding will be $30,000 over 5 months.

George A. Truskey of Biomedical Engineering has received a fellowship award from the Whitaker Foundation for student Sarah Roberts. Total funding will be $38,000 over 12 months.

Joseph F. Ustach of the Marine Lab has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “Oceanographic Instrumentation, RV Cape Hatteras.” Total funding will be $48,950 over 24 months.

Ava Vinesett of Dance has received an award from Dance USA for a project entitled “Ronald K. Brown Choreography Project.” Total funding will be $7,500 over 6 months.

John H. Willis of Biology has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “FIBR: Integrated ecological and genomic analysis of speciation in mimulus.” Total funding will be $4,999,977 over 60 months.

Thomas P. Witelski of Mathematics has received an award from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “FRG - Collaborative Research: New Challenges in the Dynamics of Thin Films and Fluid Interfaces (Supplement).” Total funding will be $98,770 over 35 months.

Ronald G. Witt of History has received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a project entitled “Petrarch and Provence: Between Seclusion and the World.” Total funding will be $100,254 over 12 months.

Pei Zhong of Mechanical Engineering has received an award from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled “Targeted Gene Delivery and Activation by Ultrasound.” Total funding will be $1,732,500 over 59 months.
