1. Competitive Proposal Preparation

An overview of the grant/fellowship process, and how knowing how the process works can positively affect your proposal preparation. Topics covered include: sponsor agency research, review process, tips on clear and concise grant writing, and some of the common differences between public and private funding applications.Training available upon request. For more information, contact Judith Andersson, the ORS Outreach Coordinator.

3. Human Subjects (Re)Certification Workshops

For certification or recertification, ORS offers a number of workshops for campus-based investigators. For more information on the following workshops, contact Lorna Hicks, ORS Human Protections Administrator.

A Field Guide to Human Subjects
What constitutes research with human subjects? What kinds of research are eligible for exemption and for expedited review?

Consent I: Consent in the Time of Scrutiny
According to the federal regulations, what information must be in a consent form? How can social and behavioral scientists employ these requirement elements of consent? Under what circumstances can the elements be waived? Do subjects always have to sign a consent form?

Consent II: Fine Tuning the Consent Process
How should the consent process be tailored to the community from which subjects are recruited? When and how should assent be obtained from children? What consent process should be used when the subjects speak a language other than English. Can the format of a consent form affect the response rate? Bring your pencils. This workshop will involve writing and rewriting consent language. For example, how might one translate the following, "articulation and negotiation of gender roles" into lay language?

Discussion with Linda George, IRB Chair
This session is designed particularly for experienced researchers who have completed the basic workshops. It will use case studies that require the application of federal regulations, Duke policy and the fundamental ethical principles described in the Belmont Report.

Cheap & Seductive: Research Using the Internet
This is a special topic, useful for those who do research on or about the Internet or who plan to do so. The workshop covers ethical issues particular to Internet research as well as the technical issues involved in protecting subject confidentiality in the electronic environment.

4. Introduction to Graduate Research Funding

Particularly helpful to 1st year or early graduate students, this brief session outlines the classic stages of graduate funding, common "fundable" projects and study, and hints on integrating a successful search for funding into graduate training. For more information, contact Judith Andersson, the ORS Outreach Coordinator.

5. Introduction to Human Subjects Based Research

An introduction navigating the IRB protocol. For more information, contact Holly Williams-Stafford, ORS Human Subjects Specialist.

6. Locating Research Funding

Individual trainings on locating funding are available for Duke University faculty members, staff members, and postdoctoral researchers. Departments and schools may also contact us to arrange for workshops. For more information, contact Judith Andersson, the ORS Outreach Coordinator.
