- The terms and conditions are reviewed and negotiated, if necessary,
by ORS staff in consultation with the principal investigator.
- If the award requires a signature of acceptance, ORS will sign on
behalf of Duke or, if needed, secure the President's or the Vice Provost
for Research's signature.
Some sponsors, particularly small foundations, send letters of agreement
to principal investigators requesting that they sign and return the
documents. Principal investigators may sign the documents if they wish,
but as they are not authorized to enter the University into any agreements,
the award documents must also be approved and signed by ORS, which will
then return them to the sponsor.
- If necessary, ORS will return the document for sponsor signature.
- When the award is fully executed, ORS will distribute the award notice
and any attachments to the principal investigator and co-principal investigators,
the administrative department, and Sponsored Programs.
- At the request of ORS, Sponsored Programs establishes a WBS element
(fund code) for the project.
- The principal investigator may initiate spending on the start date
of the project.
If the Principal Investigator wishes to initiate spending before the
start date of the project, see Pre-award
Spending.
